400 Four engine

    I have a 400 Four engine cluttering up my garage.
    It came with a box of bike, claimed to have done 34K miles.
    The head and barrels have been removed but everything seems to be
    in the boxes somewhere. Someone took the trouble to grease the bores
    so corrosion should not be a problem.

    Someone would probably like to give it a proper strip and rebuild to
    fit into a project bike. There is also a frame about to go to the tip.

    Any offers ?

  4. Be cheaper to buy a running 400F and just nick the engine from that.
    Last time I costed it out, doing a decent 400F engine rebuild (bores,
    pistons, rings, camchain, tensioner blades, oil seals, gaskets, odds and
    sods) came to about £600 in parts.

    The bores&pistons etc look good, as does the tensioner blade.
    I would change the camchain as a matter of course but the rest looks like
    the only reason the heads&barrels came off was to make it easier to get
    the engine out. Naturally the crankcase will need splitting if only to
    evict the spiders and rodents etc.
    YMMV, Sold as seen, Caveat emptor, Spares&Repairs only, ICBA to fix it.

    Needs a good home. Someone might love it.

  6. There are two: one fixed and one moving. As long as the chain's kept
    tensioned, they last a helluva long time: you're right. The problem
    comes when the tensioner sticks and the chain flaps about, wearing
    itself and the blade(s) in the process.

    Um, I really, really doubt that. It's quite possible to remove the
    engine without doing that, though if you *do* want to make it easier,
    removal of the sump is the best way. If the top end's been taken off,
    it's fucked somewhere. Always the safest assumption.
    Oh, definitely worth keeping as useful spares, no question.

    Ah. I am a few more miles away. (Two miles from Wattlefield any good?)

    Really must remember I'm really a bit past building the kneeler I've
    always wanted...

    Come and take a look and decide for yourself what it should be worth.
    What do the FOAK think ?. I would be happy at 100 but ICBW.
    You are going to need to buy a timing chain and gaskets at least.

  10. To give you an idea, last year I sold two 400F engines, proven runners,
    with the seller able to run the engines up and listen to them before
    sale (and then help me remove them from the chassis). One made just over
    £150, and the other just over £200. A third, with a seized camchain
    tensioner and snapped-off bolt (but still running sweetly) made £100.

    On that basis, a basket case engine is worth £25-40. The world is full
    of them.

    Fairy nuff.
    I was guessing rather wildly, it is just cluttering the place up.
    Buyer can also pick from the remaining junkbox FWIW, I managed to sell
    enough of the rather silly box of bike purchase to cover what I paid
    but not the fuel to collect it so I am not badly out of pocket.
