  1. Passed yesterday.
Can anyone recommend a sports or sports tourer that would fit the above
size wise and will not need a mortgage to insure it ? Someone has
recommended SV650, but don't know about insurance as yet, still waiting
    for a referral from insurer.

    Many thanks.

That's very rude of me. I should have at least asked your hair colour
    and build.

The reason you'll need a mortgage to insure it is because he's such a
risk, not just from experience, but from his age too.

I suggest you get him a 'naked' sports bike like a Honda CB500 or a
Kawasaki ER-5. They're in a low insurance group, very reliable and
cheap to fix *when* he crashes/drops them. They're also easily
restricted to 33bhp but will still get to about 80mph easily for
motorway work and will get to about 90mph if you try hard enough.

    Just my 2p's worth.

Of course he's out there right now looking at ZX7R's and ZZR6's and
drooling. The cheeky brat took my CBR Hurricane 750 out whilst I was
away on hols - or so he claimed - I wondered why the tank was empty !!

If he wants a faired bike then he could always get a Kawasaki GPZ500,
which is an ER-5 with a fairing on it. I think the Honda CB500S is
pretty much the same idea (CB500 with a fairing)

He *is* going to drop it and it will look a mess afterwards, if it's
unfaired then it'll be cheaper to kick back into shape.

ZZR6 is not a bad choice. It's quite soft going compared to a "real"
sportsbike, so a bit more forgiving. It also has oodles of points for
attaching luggage/cargo nets etc so it's ok for touring stuff too.

I had two after passing my test and didn't drop either of them, but the
general consensus is that you will at some point throw your first bike down
the road. If he's prepared to pay £350 for a piece of coloured plastic, then
go for it. Also be aware that spare parts can be found on ebay ;-)

Finally, take him out on the back of your CBR750, pull in to a petrol
station, fill it up and then make the little bastard pay for it :)

  14. Many thanks again guys..

Good old Carole Nash, to upgrade current premium from Varadero 125 to
SV 650 is an additional £242 covering both of us, which I guess isn't
bad for 3rd party only. Total cost about £600 I think.

Sadly, Dad's wallet and taxi service is desperately trying to get out
of it's current contract obligations, but failing miserably.

I have recently bought 3 very usable fairing side panels for my Gixer on
eBay. Total cost was less than 70 quid. Two of them I'd be quite happy
to have on the bike full-time, and I'm quite fussy.

Try some of the online brokers (bennetts is the only one I know)and get an
idea instantly of the likely costs. I passed yesterday too, but I'm 35 -
an SV650S for me will be around 350-400 quid - if car insurance prices are
    anything like bikes, I expect it'll be much more expensive (i.e. x3 - x5)
    for a 17 year old.

  17. Asking BGN a question like that is like asking most of the posters here

  20. He'll crash whatever he has, you know that?

ZZR6 is good VFM. Not a supersports bike, and with seriously crappy
suspension, but that's easily uprated. It's fast, comfy and economical.
