    Sorry, but pointing out what went wrong in one case is not the same as
    making it right in every case. There may be, as you say, parallels,
    but to suggest either that a solution to the 'Irish Problem' was
    simple had there been a political will or that one can extrapolate
    from that to Moslem extremism is naive in the extreme.

    It is fairly well accepted here that it would not have been so very hard
    to deal with Provo. I've yet to hear a convincing argument from any
    party of why it wasn't made so however. It may be a feature of middle
    of the road democratic systems.
    Naive I'm not and I am only saying there are three things (amongst many)
    that could be done or done more effectively. Massive pressure on certain
    overseas governments. Internment/expulsion of those who give active
    *and* passive support (1). Significant travel restrictions based on
    generic profiling.

    One might throw in some fairly heavy pressure on internal ethnic
    communities to monitor themselves a bit better, though I think this
    might be happening anyway.

    None of it is very nice or remotely desirable but in extremis...
