    Hi everyone,,,
Have came across a cheap buy on a 84 Honda VF1100C. The owner rode in
on it, got drunk and lost his keys and now wants to sell it cheap. It
has a driveshaft and a raditor which up to now has been two reasons
for myself to stay away from them, preferring the air cooled chain
driven concept. Was wondering if anyone has any good or bad words
    concerning this motor.

    thankyou for any input...

    Hey, neighbour. (N.B)
Can't comment on the motor, (I owned an '83 VF750F and it was great, but not
really comparable). What I will offer, though, is that shaft drive is
great. Yes, you apparently lose some horsepower compared to chaindrive, but
holy crap, we're talking 1100cc v-4 here. You can forego that loss for the
sake of (relatively) maintenance free operation. On the other hand, you
WILL lose the continuous flow-rust treatment of the left side of your rear
wheel. I will agree on the radiator, though. It just seems so.....modern,
    I guess.
(someone will be along shortly to explain why shafties can't countersteer or
    wheelie)

  3. Shafties can't wheelie? Since when???

    I beg to differ.....'85 CB650SCF (Yes, a Nighthawk).....i don't have the
skill to ride a wheelie, but it'll sure as hell get the front wheel up off
    the ground......

Thanks to all who posted a reply. I'm buying the bike. Couldn't pass
it up where it's only $500. Be a nice addition to my stable.

    Jeremy:
Oh, OK, well, that's different. If I recall, some of the '85 650 Nighthawks
(had the blinker fluid balancing system, right?) came from the factory with
the (then) new teflon-coated muffler bearings and hence were able to wheelie
at the hands of a skilled rider. They still couldn't countersteer, though,
and Jack will explain why. This newsgroup is FULL of useful info.
(sorry, Jack, but it was time)

    ' ol Fella,
The VF1100C was the best balanced and one of the fastest bikes of it's day.
The engine is a bit mechanical causing an annoying tick at certain
temperatures. The valves must be adjusted often. As far as wheelies, Hell
yes it'll do a wheely. You should be able to smoke the rear tire too!
    Good luck,

That model designation seems to signal recollections of my old
'83 V65 Magna. If I'm wrong, please ignore.

Yes, it was great fun to ride, and after the "stuck in first gear"
issue was corrected on warranty, after only about 1 month of
ownership, I never had any additional problems. Despite the
reputed cam oiling problems, of which I never experienced,
I owned the bike(off and on) for 17 years.

However, I'm not too sure of "well balanced". I'm not sure
whether it was balance of something else, but it was probably
the worst handling bike I've ever owned. But, I'm not com-
plaining because I was expecting that with the large rake value
for appearance, and since it was designed to fulfill a basic
    Vmax'ish instinct.

In retrospect, I am just very happy to have sailed through the
V65 phase of my life, unscathed.

    Thanks - Gary

You've got my email, I'm in the 75214 area.

But you might not like riding with me, I sometimes go pretty slow.

I used to like fast riding, but I guess I just outgrew it.
