He rode the same with a pillion on a bike that was falling apart and

I find it's because the level of traffic precludes driving any faster.
Like 75 ish on most of the motorways I regularly use.

  4. F**king hell. I just caught my self thinking "Won't someone think of
    the children" and meaning it!

Good argument. We've all done stuff that _might_ have killed us if
we'd got it wrong, but as it didn't, clearly it must have actually
    been safe to do so.

'Interesting' logic, that. So the fact that I survived being hit by a
car when I was six means it's safe to step out in front of moving
traffic? Or the fact that I once went up a kerb onto a grass verge at
over a ton without falling off means it's safe to do that?

ITYF luck has a great deal to do with it.

I *like* that! Sounds like a great way to approach life in general to
    me.

I think I'll start with a little dip into the jar - time to ring the
    taxman & call him a ****.

My tongue was firmly stuck to the inside of my cheek...
It's not so far removed from what we all do, albeit subconsciously.
    Human nature, innit.
