'96 Cg125 slower than '95 model

I upgraded to a slightly newer Cg125, with the new bigger looking
shape. However my new one (N reg) struggles to do 60, and will get to
60 easiest in 4th gear. In 5th gear it maintains 60 on a flat road but
    goes no further.

The year older CG (M reg pre -facelift) would easily get up to
    65-70!!!!!

Is this just because the newer model is heavier and therefore the
engine isnt' strong enough or could it be something else?

I had a problem with it backfiring when coming off the throttle, and
got a new exhaust gasket where it joins the engine, the new one is a
lot thicker and has just about eliminated the backfiring (although its
    not completely gone).

I've checked the chain is the right tension and it isn't using oil, the
M reg one I had used a lot of oil!!! This new one has done 17k miles
my old one had done 23k when I sold it.

Any useful advice appreciated I know I need to pass test and get a
bigger bike and I will do but til now I'd like to ride at 70 instead of
    60! thanks!

Ha ha--- definately not fatter I'm only lightweight !!! 9 stone

Adjusted mixture which has 99% got rid of the backfire but the
    performance is still crap!!!!

Maybe the other/this speedo was/is out.

Try putting a sprocket on the front with one tooth over standard.

Gearing up will not help. Top gear is already too high.
A big-bore conversion is the only answer.
And big valves. A big-bore conversion and big valves are the only two answers.
Or possibly a gas-flowed head and new cam....

Does it have the original Honda exhaust?, there are some nasty aftermarket
ones out there. If it is the genuine Honda, is it rattly or choked to shit
and back. Oddly, the best one to fit is the Hongdou/Chituma pipe if a
genuine isn't available. They rot a bit briskly but they are cheap.

Clean the air filter. If it is looking skanky, replace it. Don't try to be
pikey and use any old foam, spend a fiver and get a genuine filter and only
-lightly- oil it. Use fresh engine oil, -not- the super tacky foam filter
    oil.

Check the spark plug. If it looks even vaguely like it is worn, or has
overheated, replace it and gap it correctly!

If yours is a CDI model, move on. If it is a points model, replace the
points and condensor. Simple job, brings about first kick starting.

Take the needle out of the carb and raise it to the notch furthest away from
the top of the carb, ie, put the pingfuckit clip in the bottom groove.
Clean out the float bowl while you're at it. Reassemble carefully and yes,
that odd shaped bit of metal that sits atop the needle is important.

Now set the valves up properly. Simple job to do.

Fit an inline fuel filter. Thats just a precaution.

Take it for a blat. If it still isn't pulling to 70MPH, fit a one tooth
-smaller- front sprocket, it'll allow the bike to rev out.

TBH, 70 is about top whack on a sorted CG.

I was wondering, actually, if you can really tell the difference between
65mph and 70mph? Acceleration, yes, albeit a meter per minute or
whatever but it's more noticeable than an alledged 5mph in top gear on a
    125, imho.
    Well, yes..

I dont know if its original but I am thinking the problem may well be
the exhaust, how can I tell if its an original part? It is still
making funny backfire noises as I decelerate.
pikey and use any old foam, spend a fiver and get a genuine filter and

Had a quick look at the filter and gauzes and it looks pretty new to me
overheated, replace it and gap it correctly!

These jobs sound a bit complicated to me but willing to give it a go
-smaller- front sprocket, it'll allow the bike to rev out.

Think this may help as well because once I go in 5th it doesnt go any
    further unless going downhill!

    thanks for your help!

  11. It's held back by all the exclamation marks you carry in your topbox.

Get rid of them and it will fly.
