....to Verdigris, who kindly acquired, and then patiently hung onto some
AS400 kit for me recently, and which I finally got round to picking up from
    him today.

Even though he refused to take anything for it, I owe him a beer or five -
the kit appears to be brand new, never used!

Once again, many thanks - you've made my day. :)

Is that AS400 as in IBM AS400 computer?

That's exactly what I was thinking, we use one for our company OSCAR
system that has a JWalk skin on it these days to make it easier on the
    eyes.

Do you work for the, what must be biggest employer in your area, by chance?

If so, aye... I'm aware they use these.

    Yup.

I appreciate it's fast becoming regarded as something for the Antiques
Roadshow, but I need to get back into a job that pays semi decent money (1),
and I've been out of it for long enough to want to get back up to speed
again before going for any interviews.

    (1) What I consider semi decent, anyway... I suspect some of the other IT
bods in here wouldn't get out of bed for what I'd sell my IT soul for.

ISTR a long time ago that you were thoroughly fed up with IT and had gone
    into some other line.

Why the cahnge of heart or am I (as usual), totally off the mark?

I do. Although after 20 years of OSCAR development they're switching
over to a freshly developed system called TravelBox which I think was
    developed by Codegen (Italy?).

    Oh right.

Does that still use AS400s, or are they going over to something else?

I found it a bit boring at times... but then not being able to realistically
get on the property ladder due to needing a higher income becomes a bit
tedious after a while as well.

Not sure - I wonder how much processor power it needs and if an AS400
can keep up? Mind you, it's just a huge database nomatter what front
    end you stick on it.

It needs to take about 750 users, with about 500 of those using the
    system all the time.

"Using some of the most advanced technologies available in the marketplace
    to date..."

    That'll be a no, then. ;-)
I'm no guru, but knowing the size of the employee base at the last two
places I worked at that use AS400, I should think so.

Not sure there's much work for AS400 bods these days though. I just did a
quick search on a job site and found 1 AS400 related job within 100 miles
of London, 56 Unix related and 64 Windows.

There's enough out there, if you're prepared to go where the work is.

And 46 in London at present on Jobserve.

Not the point - they never seem to come up on ebay, whereas the systems
do... so you've done me a massive favour.
I might need to get some leads to hook it all up, but they look standardish,
    so no issue there.
I'll let you know when I pick up the box it's going to be used with...
