A Champion Update

I have been to see Champ in hoppytal today and can report him in
reasonably good spirits. Obviously he's still tired and sore but he
appreciates all the texts even if sometimes he's too painkillered out
to remember to reply.

Current state of play:

He is still tired and his soft tissue injuries are apparently more
painful than the breaks.

He will have his thigh x-rayed today to see what progress there is on
new bone growth. What happens next will depend on what that shows.

Tomorrow he is due to have surgery on his hand - they will be
inserting some metal and he says it might stick out. This sounds quite
exciting in a Mad Max sort of way.

He is also due to have a scan on the injury to his shoulder but can
now lift his arm above his head. He dressedd himself this morning so
is extremely pleased with himself.

**Again, if people want to visit, please contact Gyp about it. There's
not much space and he does still need plenty of rest.**

I've also taken some pics which he has given me permission to upload
to the internet. Actually he asked if I was posting them and looked
disappointed when I said I wasn't, so I said I would give him his five
mins of fame.

There doesn't actually look like there's that much wrong with him. I don't
know what he's moaning about.

Excellent! That will make him fun at Christmas!

I didn't ask. I did wonder about the pisspot though. Is it as
cardboard as it looks?!?

Especially when you realise that hey, you don't have to lie awake in
pain, a nice nurse will come and give you something!

To be honest, I was quite nervous going to see him as I was expecting
wires and casts and traction and him to be drooling out of a wired
jaw.

However, to be serious, while he certainly looks a lot better than I
was expecting, he's still very, very battered and I know his familyare
still very worried about him overdoing it.

 

It'll all be over by Christmas.

<checks photos again> IIRC they're moulded paper with a waxy coating inside.

He seems to have his books all neatly lined up with the edge of the cabinet.

Medicine seems so sanitised these days.

Ged, yes. If my grandad looked that zonked, I'd be worried about what he'd
been overdoing, too.

 

He'll certainly be using his left hand for a while.

 

He's been off the morphine for a while, and I suspect it's more the
tiredness than the drugs per se. Still on some codeine (together with
paracetamol and diclofenac) but not enough to be really spaced out.

When I spoke to him this morning he was suggesting that if it wasn't
starting to heal they'd probably operate to stick some bone grafts in.

Keeping my fingers crossed.

God, he's looking old. Poor old sod.

He /is/ old.

 

Well, yes. However he virtually fell asleep in front of us this
afternoon after popping a few. "Painkillered out" may be the wrong
term but he's really not as perky as he appears.

Yes, that was one of the options. I hope that he's had the x-ray but
I've just spoken to someone who didn't think he had yet.

Heh, that's just what I thought.

He does. Along with his copy of Practical Caravanning....

It does. I've not seen a lot of broken thighs but the last I saw the
owner was plastered up so it was a surprise just to see a couple of
incisions top and bottom. Hopefully the x-rays will show that
there's some new bone growth.

*snort* I had him to myself for a while so I did ask him if he
planned to... "overdo" it any time soon...

 

I'm sorry - but the Hotlips Honey, or whatever her name was, after the
pix of Champ, really threw me

Looks younger than me.

 

I thought it was to show what a shave and a bit of lippy can do.

 

More or less the time a mate in a similar accident took to recover,
including some titanium added to his bones. Fully recovered today.

However, past the first months he was told he needed some extra surgery in
order to fix a couple of screws. Then some bastard noticed that as a
Ducatisti it shouldn't amaze him

All the best for Champ and his loved ones, who probably need more support
now.
