or developing a European deterrent. It doesn't have to be like the
eurofighter. As an aside, I'd like to see a United States of Europe as
a world super-power to equal the yanks and China.

But why go nuclear (or nucular as dubya would say) at all? Lets spend
the money on equipping our troops properly instead, with enough left
over to repair the damage Blur has done to the welfare state. At least
then we'll be happy and healthy until we're exterminated.

I'm a supervisor and my basic salary is around £25k. Overtime takes
that up to about £40k. I get daily allowances for working away from
home plus a company van and phone. That's it apart from a
non-guaranteed bonus at xmas which last year was £1k.

We're currently charging a standard rate of £35/ph for work quoted
well in advance of being carried out, £45 for 'outage' work at power
stations and refineries. We charge more for 'breakdown' work where we
get called in to do work that's shutting down production and costing
the client big bucks. We also charge for mobilisation and machine
    hire.

My previous employer wouldn't let me do a stroke of work on site
unless they were getting £60/hr no matter how basic the job was.
    "Because they're worth it."

The one I can't understand is the rate garages charge for their
technicians because no way do they invest as much in r&d as we do yet
    their hourly rates are higher.

    Supply vs demand, innit?

People will always need cars fixing, and it seems they'll happily pay
    those rates.

Imagine the squabbles when the cheese eating surrender monkeys got too
interested in avoiding any potential internal problems and tried to
    vetoe any action.
I think a strong conventional force would be a major asset but the
cost to modernise and maintain one would be horrendous. Trident is
cheap compared to completely rebuilding a surface fleet that includes
a couple of task force sized carriers.

With the size of our army we're better off on small scale offensive
actions rather than major peace keeping efforts and the less said
    about the airforce the better.

That's about the truth of it. If power generation companies were to
pay us more then they'd have to charge more to the householder and
everyone would have a hissy fit over the increase.

It's really not far off from what I made last year but I'm not a
supervisor (journeyman electrician) so I don't get the van and phone. I
didn't work much overtime last year (they know better than to ask me)
and total earnings was 69K USD. Our foremen make something like 40 USD
an hour but have to put up with all kinds of grief.

The bike shops here charge 75USD an hour for labor.

When I do side jobs, I charge 65USD an hour.

I just had Piri Piri chicken at Nando's again. It's positively the
    hottest thing I've ever eaten.

Trust me I've eaten just about every hot thing going but Nando's extra
hot, with extra garlic hot sauce on top, takes the biscuit.

It sounded like something from the Pacific Islands, but I see it's
    African.

I have to stick to 'mild' or the top of me head starts itching and
    sweating.

There's a shop here that sells hundreds of hot sauces, each one claiming
    it's the hottest.

But isn't it the case that most of your jobs would involve a lot more time
    than your average car/bike job?

I never bother with the Extra Hot at Nandos, it's just daft. And this
coming from someone who happily eats stupidly hot chilli (daftest recipe
to date, one pound of beef, 400g kidney beans, 32 birds eyes, 4
habaneros/scotch bonnets, and a dash of tabasco for taste). A mate used
to buy in Blair's reserves, had some made with the 4am once and it was
delicious but had me sitting on the bog weeping the next day, no
    exaggeration.

They appear to be very reasonable rates. Maybe *too* reasonable.
For manual work, that's not a bad rate, but will everyone pay it? Will they
****, they'll look around for a cheaper quote.
    Heh, yeah.
Hourly rates can be a **** because companies (usually insurance companies,
but not just insco's) will *always* try to "chip" on everything and they
start with the hourly rate. If my boy-chic quotes for a company or insurance
job at (as an example) 40quid p/h, the insurance will try chipping him to
30-35, but if he quotes 35, they'll try chipping him to 25-30. "Man off the
street" doesn't get quoted company rates because he won't try chipping. It's
a fucking nightmare walking the line between getting the best price for the
job to make it worthwhile doing and not getting the job because the price
    was too high.

Thankfully, the "none accident damage" work, like oddball paint jobs and
fitting strewth kits etc is in a different league.
