  1. Figure of speech my boy
I don't really think you will be worried too much about the bike falling
over if there is any spark in the lead

Damn....am I that old that I still consider bikes to be kick started ??

    You are kidding
or don't you know about "the dirt" and those speciality bikes which
    are ridden in it

    Bypass the sidestand switch

A lot of Suzukis will turn over but not start when the sidestand
    switch fails

Well the "start ya bastard " suggestion definitely deserves a beer - I
owe you a 6pack if you wish to collect it let me know your preference.

Got a can of it on the weekend but didn't get a chance to do anything
until yesterday (26th), a spray in the intakes and it fired and ran
first hit - yay, we have spark, that narrows it down !! Then the
    strangest thing happened...

    ....it kept bloody running !!

Oh hell, if it runs perfectly then I have an intermittent electrical
fault - the utter worst case scenario - it can months to find
    those...

After a couple of minutes it coughed and spluttered, so I fed it a bit
more spray and revved it and it kept going....
    <phew> it's a fuel problem.

OK, shut it off, head up the road and buy 4litre of metho and 5L of
petrol. I can't easily drain the tank (oh for the old days of having
an exposed tap with a hose you could disconnect) so I figure if I fill
the half empty tank with metho (to make it run if there's water in
there) and petrol to dilute crap fuel then I might be OK. Fill it with
4L of metho and about 3L of petrol

organise the support crew to follow me, get changed and grab helmet
and gloves and off we go...

No real HP, probably getting about 15HP out of it - wide open throttle
and we're doing 60K but it's running - head up the road, it's starting
to clear and I can back off the throttle a bit, woohoo we're OK !!

Ooops spoke to soon it starts bucking and coughing and spluttering
really badly, down to 30K and on the verge, finally pull up and get
the magic spray out, revs hard when you spray it, coughs and splutters
at 4K rpm when you don't, definitely a crap fuel problem. OK, turn it
around and see if I can minimise the distance I'm going to have to
push it. Head back the 10K we've come, 4 Km from home it improves
again. OK chuck a u-ey at the roundabout and head back out - doing ok
on partial throttle but can't open it very far - coughs and splutters.
Doing OK on the partial though, holding a steady 60 (in a 60 zone),
get to the 80 zone and some hills and it starts to struggle, OK, turn
it around, do another lap back to the roundabout - getting better all
    the time.

3 laps later it'll rev to 6-7K on partial throttle as long as you
don't open it wide open - OK, keep heading out to the highway then.

I then did 150K on it, topping up another 5L of fuel part way. It's
still got some crap fuel in there to burn off but it's running and
going OK - still splutters on WOT high revs but I'll need to burn off
the metho as well as the diluted crap fuel (or water whichever it is
that's the problem) before I can say there's a problem aside from
    fuel.

Very odd though there was obviously something seriously wrong with the
fuel for it to die that totally and not even splutter.

Not yet, but that's on the to do list for the weekend - or I might
have to delegate it- now it's rideable I can get it to a mechanic - I
doubt I'm going to have time to do it myself.

Annoying that there's no "float bowls" you can drain.

Yeah there's pluses and minuses to the modern EFI setups aren't there.

(still wouldn't swap back to carbs for quids though)

they use the TL motor right?

the SV uses a modded TL motor right?

and the the DL uses a modded SV motor right?

    keep with me here..

sounds similar but for severe problem I had with my DL, a block fuel
filter, yours sounds like a supply problem

    have a read of

    and

    http://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,11603.0.html for a pump
    flow test

I could be so off the mark here, but hey

    Yup, they're definitely related
OK, sounds like I pack it off to get the filter swapped and pump
    tested, thanks.

the pump flow is a easy test on the DLs, DIY

just beware..... the filter for the DL1000 is about $400

thus why someone came up with the after market fuel filter mod..

I have no idea if the Raptor uses the same pump as the TL or even if
the TL has the same set up as the DL

the DL pump is a Mitsubishi

NOTHING is an easy test on the Raptor - it's all well crammed in ;-
( Significant disassembly required at a quick glance of the manual -
    I'll be delegating it.
    Oh Sh*t !
NFI either, only one way to find out (extract it) - I'll look at the
pics in the manual and compare them to the links and see if they at
    least look the same.

Bloody 'ell !!!..$400 for a filter??

So apart from the fuel pump suggestion I was right on the money about
    getting a proper bike :)

Bad fuel. 4L of metho and 3L of super and it's running again albeit
not totally ok - need to send it off to get fuel filter changed (and
hoping it's a TL filter not an unobtainium Cagiva part) and the fuel
dropped out of it - it's rideable now albeit lacking in top end so I
can get it to the mechanic

Hoping to drop it off tomorrow for the above

Google groups for the long version...

Interesting. Discussion here saying the chemistry of metho and/or
petrol has changed enough recently that this doesn't tend to work so
    well as it used to:

From Year 9 chemistry - petrol floats on water and doesn't
mix, methanol and petrol will mix and burn, methanol and water will
mix and burn (Hammo can undoubtably give more details), petrol floats
on water so the fuel outlet being near the bottom means too close to
straight water goes into the carbs/efi. hence metho in the tank will
get it all mix together and still burn (albeit not as well).

If metho is no longer methanol but something else then I'd need to
know what the something else is...
