  1. .... after his death on September 7th, LJK Setright's obituary has finally
appeared in Mr Murdoch's purportedly quality daily.

"Despite his penchant for speed, Setright rarely got into trouble on the
road. The one serious accident of his life, sustained on a motorcycle, was
not his fault." The more things change ...

Design ... is the process of organising in the best possible way the
compromises that are inevitable in the formation of some manufactured
product. This makes it the work of an engineer.

Styling ... a process calculated to make something attractive regardless of
its real virtues, in contrast, perhaps, to design, which must make something
    good despite its intrinsic vices.

Good styling ... achieves a communicable and intelligible expression of the
intrinsic or important characteristics of the product, while good
engineering recognises the importance of line and contour and proportion
(and even, where appropriate, of colour) in making the product attractive -
that is, something that will be sought not only because there is an
inescapable need for it but also because it appears to enhance our world.

Good design raises engineering to the level of fine art, promotes art to the
    dignity of fine engineering.

Technology ... is the tool which gives engineering the ability to employ
science, which in turn often draws inspiration from other sources.
Technology is not invention, it is the manifestation of practical curiosity.
It is important not to confuse technology with science. Science is best
pursued for its own sake, the discovery of the laser was science, putting it
    to use was technology.

Best automotive author ever IMO, his writing and Bob Freemans water colours,
awesome. Bring back Supercar Classics. Right I'm off to the loft to dig out
the old Car Magazines. Time to reread his Handlebar
columns.............maybe Bike and especially RiDE wordsmiths should do the
    same.

    Cheers,

    DP
