That's what I thought too, until I got lost in the back streets of
    Miami. Proper scary.

Similar happened to me coming back into Miami from the keys, a light
plane had crashed so all traffic was diverted off the highway into
some god forsaken area full of dodgy looking blokes lurking on street
corners. It was the days before wide spread satnavs so I was well &
truly lost with the family in the car and my youngest around 6 at the
time wanting to stop for the khazi. Eventually found my way back to
the highway & back to the hotel.

I'm off in a few weeks
New York is worth a squirt, just the once. It was nice sailing out of NY
    harbour on a cruise ship.
Yep, it is a bit fucking much.

Lower east side of NY, rather arse clenching it was.

Immigration doesn't bother me so much. Fingerprinting is all over now -
Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan all do it iirc.

The security's the bigger pita imo. We did 'opt out' of the full body
scan coming home last time from the US (both of us did) and it caused a
minor panic with the security guards. I consider it a minor victory
these days to get through security by a) not removing my belt and b) not
removing the toothpaste from my bag. Go me, I'm such a rebel.

    Really?

I got absolutely battered (in a good way) there, no problems whatsoever.
It's no worse than, say, Camden.

Might not have been, it was like something out of a grandmaster flash video.

It was 15 years ago. It was the area on the way down to the helicopter take
    off/landing pads near the river.

OK US Space & Rocket Centre. It's all "NASA" to me.

SR71 Blackbird at the entrance and all the space race stuff including a
complete standing Saturn V and a second horizontal unit, orbital and moon
    lander modules.

I had the same thing in 2000. 2 clouds in the sky and they cancelled it. I
had a nice day ogling surfers on Cocoa Beach though.

It was the size of the Saturn V that got me when I went to Kennedy.
Especially when you look at the size of the rocket compared to the tiny
compartment that the passengers sat in.

unpaid road toll + interest. Probably the death penalty if the case is
    transferred to Alabama's jurisdiction.

God forbid you have the wrong version of the blasted form because the
airport lunge in the UK hadn't been updated.
It's a PITA, I've been for work I am not sure I'd be bothered for
    pleasure.

That's the one in Huntsvile isn't it? <clicks> thought so. I've been
there, a loooong timt ago. I quite liked hwat I saw in Alabama. Stayed
in a hotel by a beautiful lake, in Guntersville. Lots of huntin'
    shootin' fishin' types of course.
+1 at the Alabama one. I too remember how tiny the capsule seemed with
its canvas deck chairs and all those big clunky switches.

Jan 2010, despite doing the online thingy I still had to submit 2
forms to the immigration at DFW & be finger printed.
