Have a look in your nearest hardware / irrigation store, see if you
can find a bit of hose to cover it. Or, I guess, get the missus
to sew up a long thin tube out of an old towel ... just make sure
a snake doesn't pinch it to wear to the beach.

    I'm going to bed now.

Wot J5 said, dont ride it like a pussy or it will be shit. Open the
throttle hard in the lower gears (2nd, 3rd, 4th if you can) in the
midrage (dunno what revs that be on a Bird) a few times and let the
engine braking slow you down (goes without saying that the engine must
be up to operating temp). Then your run in is done, do it within the
first 50kms. Running in gently is bullshit best left to 1960's engines
    with 1960's metals in them.

Then run the stock paper peice of shit air filter till its due for
replacement, and throw a UniFilter in. No point throwing money away on
paper filters when you can clean and reuse a foam one over and over again.

Next, get your arse up here. I'll be heading down the Oxley tomorrow,
leaving 8am which would put me in Walcha about 1/4 to 9. You'll need to
leave Sydney about 6am, just watch for 'roos between the Pacific Hwy and
Walcha when you're sitting on 280kph :) Actually, if you do that,
you'll get to Walcha before me!

    Cheers,

I just found out the young kid at the local bikeshop [who always ogles gNat when we're there] is running
second at the moment (Neilsen #23).
I was looking at his bike today... ferkin' trick-looking! I'll see if I can use gNatalie as bait to cadge a
    ride... [I'm shameless].

  11. You could always do what I did, put clear plastic tubing over the chain,
only enough chain sticking out to put the lock on. Needed hot soapy
water to do it, but the tube is NOT coming off and it doesn't mark the
rims, don't use it much these days, the bike is now 11 years old and it
has an alarm and immobilize now, and sits in a locked garage with a
movement sensor hooked up to the house alarm system :) No one is going
to go to that much trouble to steal spare parts.

Congrats on the new toy Dave.
You're supposed to follow the manufacturers running in instructions, not make
    up your own.

Page 69 in the owners manual.
    "Running In.
Help assure your motorcycle's future reliability and performance by paying
extra attention to how you ride during the first 500km. During this period,
avoid full-throttle starts and rapid acceleration."

...or as the salesman at Redwing told me... "Scrub in the tyres, bed in the
brakes, then just ride it how you're going to ride it."

They're already run in. From my experience with 2 Blackbirds, they don't run
hotter when new than they will in a thousand km, & the petrol consumption
doesn't change after a thousand km.

thats about how it goes, ride it as you would but no thrashing

when i went to the duke factory every bike is put on a rolling road through all the gears
and up to about 9K RPM

no doubt this is to give it a good start and to check that there is no probs

all engines take varying kays to be fully run in

where i was working before we had these little citroen vans and the dealer told me that at 8K kays
it would free right up and sure enough bang around 8K it was a big difference

Hey Davo, I have the perfect solution for you. I'll mind your bike at
night. Oh, and I need petrol money. :)

I must say, I'm sorta missing not having a bike with all your dribbling.
    Maybe it's time I traded the D100 in for a new beast....hehe

Mate, I'm all hot air - it's true. I will get to 37,000 some day but not
for a while. It's likely to be months I'd reckon. :)
