This is a cry for help before I throw my new PC out of the window in a thousand pieces. I have E Mailed the manufacturer to complain and I'm awaiting a reply. One of the most annoying problems is that there appears to be a conflict between Windows Journal Viewer and Adobe Acrobat Reader v6.0. If I follow a link in Internet Explorer that should load a PDF document the normal process is that IE goes to the website, Acrobat launches and you can read the PDF document. However on my lovely machine all that happens is that Windows Journal Viewer establishes a circular conflict with Windows Installer. Installer cannot find the WJV.msi file and points to a duff directory on the D (hard) drive with a reference to a Temporary file. D:\DOCUME~1\User\LOCALS~1\Temp\IXP000.TMP\1 No such file exists, I cannot find the Windows Journal Viewer.msi file (I assume it's the installer file?) that the prompt box asks for and the only way out is to use Task Manager to kill the WJV, Installer and the website under IE. Adobe Acrobat was downloaded into its own directory from the Adobe site entirely as per standard instructions. I have also set this to Windows 2000 compatibility as suggested by Cab - however there is no change. Even more bizarrely Acrobat occasionally loads after all the conflict with Journal Viewer is killed off. If it runs in the background then the links via Internet Explorer then work! Has anyone got a clue as to what on earth is going on - apart from "your machine is fucked"? All clues gratefully received.
Try going to: Start menu.. Settings.. Control Panel Add / Remove Programs Find Windows Journal viewer, and if it's there click on the remove button. If it's not there, or that doesn't sort it out then without looking at the machine it could be awkward to talk you through. Plus my brain isn't working well as I'm full of cold.
<snip> Delete Journal Viewer..Run Acrobat..Re-iniate journal viewer fro the MS disc? Dunno..try it. -- Petel . 02 M2 Buell. C90-ZZR. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/peteh1/website/index.html
Check the folder options>file types to see if there is a conflict there. ..pdf files should open with Acrobat. IMHO Adobe Acrobat 6.0 is a pile of poo, 5.1 works much better.
I also cannot see any reason why pdf should invoke WJV. Double check the file assocaitions (control panel>folder options>file types) Make sure that .pdf is set to launch with adobe. Also, might well be worth getting rid of WJV in toto, unless you do have a need for it. I have had this. But I cant remember exactly how I sorted it. ISTR that after I installed the latest Service Pack and patches for Win2K it didn't happen again. HTH
Well I've done that and it seems to be OK for now. The file associations were correct - i.e. PDF pointed to Acrobat. Out of curiosity what does Journal Viewer actually do? GWS.
I had just this problem on my work PC when the IT department installed AutoCAD architectural desktop which must of included Acrobat Reader 6. The problem was solved by uninstalling Acrobat Reader 6 and then installing Acrobat Reader 5. HTH

I've just got to work out why Internet Explorer just disappears of its own volition, why the PC crashes of its own accord and why Mailwasher disappears from view when minimised. Other than that all is well with my new PC. The advice from Multivision is to revert to the Mirrordisc set up and see if things carry on crashing. That will, of course, restore factory settings with no software that I actually want to use on the machine. Fat lot of good that is going to do because the next action is simply to reload the whole damn lot!!! I hate technical help desks when they make these sorts of impractical requests. I think I shall E Mail a copy of the relevant error messages from the system log and see what they make of those.
[snipsnipsnip] Good site for sorting out Windows: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp.htm A lot of instant fixes on the 'tweaks' page.
Paul Corfield wrote I would count that as a bonus. Mailwasher is not behaving itself on my machine. it tends to fall over as it exits. Shame really as it is a nice tool.
On Tue, 11 Nov 2003 19:28:00 +0000, Paul Corfield Probably a nice paper hat or summat. Seriously, there is no profit in them trying to fix the problem. All they'd rather do is ship it back and replace bits of hardware until it's fixed [1] You should have gone to an independant that cares about customers etc etc [1] And that's frankly being optimistic. It'll porlly get cleaned up and sent to the next guy. -- Catman MIB#14 SKoGA#6 TEAR#4 BOTAFOF#38 Apostle#21 Tyger, Tyger Burning Bright (Remove rust to reply) Alfa 116 Giulietta 3.0l.
