Bleeding hell, i have braved some fucking cold weather this last week,
the last item to fit to the bike is some heated grips.

    Daytonas of course.

I'm taking it out this weekend whatever the weather.

It's been warm enough for fingers not to freeze to spanners by late
morning here so I've been proceeding with the YZ250 project.

New air filter, silencer re-packed (what a filthy job that is) and
supermoto front mudguard fitted. Just got to drop the gearbox drain plug
to drill and lock wire it now, put all the rest of the plastics back and
    stick the racing numbers on.

I'd really like to try it somewhere before Hartland on the 28th. It's
been a long time since I rode a MX style bike on tarmac - particularly a
45 BHP, 100 Kg stroker. Failing that, at least now it can be moved
around easily I might dig a GFR out from behind it for a bimble.

Why do scrutineers insist on this ?

Do drain plugs have a habit of dropping out / unscrewing themselves ?

In a straw poll of nearly 30 years driving, one's never dropped out of
any of my cars or bikes .....

    In communiqué
In fact, we are supposed to refer to it as 'Technical Inspection' now,
not scrutineering. It is the responsibility of the competitor to ensure
    that their machine is 'safe'.
A vintage car managed to drop the entire contents of its sump coming
down Wiscombe a couple of years ago. The fact that the meeting hadn't
even started at least meant there was a level (well consistently
inclined), if rather slippery, playing field.
Nor mine, though on a fair percentage of the fleet, even the road legal
ones, they have been wired. TBF, I've had more problems getting sump
plugs out of SO bikes and cars, than keeping them in.

Two bikes and one car (that one was a banger racer).

I've had a couple - might be worth remembering that competition machines
will have their sump plugs undone on a more regular basis so you can't
rely on a lack maintenance to keep them in.

Good point. The Nordwest sump plug was in and out like a fiddler's elbow
during the phase when it was leaking tiny amounts of coolant in to the
system. The only times I have really struggled with removing one has
been on first acquisition of a SO bike. The worst being a Morini which
finally succumbed to a lump hammer and cold chisel.

Christ, you're a soft fucker Nige. Put some decent clothes on and the cold
    isn't an issue.
    But it's a bit chilly!

    hehehe :)

It was by far the biggest task in preparing the tart for speed hill
climbs. I had to wire the sump plug, bolts holding a gauze strainer cap
and the screws securing the oil filter cartridge cover plate. I'm not
entirely certain that some of the 'have a go', 'run what you brung',
    competitors bother.

My brother came home one time after ranting his CB500T from Cornwall to
Stranraer in a day to catch the ferry, and reasoned that, with the engine so
nicely warmed through, it would be a good time for an oil change. He
wheeled it into the barn, slung a pan under it and groped around with a
spanner. As soon as he touched the sump plug, it dropped out, followed by
all the oil. It had been hanging by a thread, and could have probably let
go earlier in the day, while he was tearing up the motorway, with
    predictable results.

It's the only time I've heard of it happening, though. Oh, there was the
time Windy found her back tyre covered in engine oil, but I think that was E
trapping the o-ring on the oil filter or something.

Won't help with cold knackers though.
