    So travelling York to London.
Is there any difference in boredom/congestion levels between the A1 and M1?
I don't think I've traversed the full length of the A1. Is it any quicker
    or slower?

    On a Bike ? A1. No contest.

More impediments to progress, but a far more pleasant journey.

  3. Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, Hog
Slower and much more prone to huge snarl-ups, IME.

If you're desperate, then M1 to the A57, hop across to the A1 and carry
on down can break the dullness slightly.

M1 has massive roadworks between Luton and the M25, which may well prove
to be a PITA even on a bike.

M1's also got bastard roadworks around the nottingham area where they are
wideining it, and thus having to widen the bridges,

A1 they are taking roundabouts out and replacing with flyovers, but they
dont usually cause troubles untill they are about to divert the road from
the roundabout to the flyover, and believe the grantham one is all done now,
colsterworth was still roundabout last time i went there (a week ago) dunno
    bout elsewhere.

Use the A1. The M1 is fucked with roadworks and the junction upgrades
on the A1 are nearly finished now.

Well that's what I found last time down. Metal barriers on the left side and
    narrow lanes stopped me filtering.

Sounds like a better idea. Just factor in the roadworks south of the
Dartford Tunnel up to the M20 junction. If you're planning to go via the
M2, there are roadworks on there near Gravesend.

That route can be an absolute **** at the wrong time of the day and I
think it's got a few cameras that aren't bike friendly.

Throw your stuff on your bike and come down to Bedford tonight. Lady
Nina is stopping here so you'll not be the slowest on the ride to
    Dover.

Cheers for the offer but I don't think I'll be able to leave until
late given the amount of stuff I still need to do up here.

I've already decided A14 A1 is better choice as there are roadworks on
the M11, shouldn't be too much of an issue as I'm on the late boat.

Well I sussed the M25 was closed at J4 and spotted stationary traffic at 1
so kept on the M/A20 to Central Lunnon. Stopped at All Bar One by the Eye
(didn't leave anything Darsy) and pondered the opportunities. Quick call and
I ended up in a cheap hotel near the Bear Lair. Curry, beer and Cognac were
consumed in volume. The old chap is surprisingly well. Fantastic late
brekkie at the Glow Lounge on Clapham Common and then brilliant sunshine all
    the way home.
