Within 10 miles of where I'm currently sat, in the North-East of
England, are Washington, New York and Philadelphia.

Obviously we just can't think of place names of our own and had to rip
    off yours.

Don't forgot, Toronto and Quebec are just down the road.
But ripping off Canadian place names is really dredging the bottom of
    the barrel, eh?

IIRC, Philadelphia was what the Greeks called Amman in the 3rd century BC.

I'm no expert on ancient Greek society, but I don't think they made it
    as far as Newcastle.

On the other hand our Washington is the original one, and is so named
because it was once the family estate of some guy called George who
was briefly famous for being a filthy traitor to his country and then
    was never heard from again.

Considering the predominance of antipodean accents in the Robin Hood (or
should it be renamed "The Ned Kelly") I think you could be right

  13. Yes, in the company of several UKRM people, perhaps including
yourself, and Molly in her pre-Molly days. That might have been the time
Bear drove me home to Barnet. I must have got there on the 307 and 313
    buses.

It's amazing, too, that those in the UK named their capital city
    after a place in Canada...

Ten or fifteen years ago Channel 3 or 4 had a series on about car
design - halfhour shows, midweek. Can you remember this, the name &
suggest somewhere where copies might be avaiable? I have a multi-
format video, so anything except French, using the same physical
cassette will do. I want to contribute it to an auto museum, after
transfer to proper format, if needed. Thanks

Go to the library and look at a map of Massachusetts (US) and you'll
see that most are named after Briish cities /

immigrants who took over their land.

20,000 years later European settlers arrived.
