Well, I know there' plenty of opinion

My good mate has just done CBT [1]. With no car experience at all he
apparently couldn't get on with gears and clutch, so they put him on an
    automatic scooter thing.

He *wants* a bike, so what does he do. Get a scooter to get some road craft
or get a bike and big car park?

[1] I'm worried about this. Apparently he came off on the North Circ and
    still got his certificate.......

Riding a bike is not something everybody can do, even if they want,
your mate will just have to accept that he is a less than person and get
used to being looked down upon.

  3. Change training schools and insist that any subsequent training is
targeted at getting him to use gears and clutch. I had / have no car
experience and I simply had to put in the extra training and effort to
get to the point of being able to passably use gears / clutch.

I certainly could not get a CBT until I had done the clutch bit and if
I'd fallen off I can't see how I'd have passed. Perhaps standards have
    changed?

Got a 50cc off-roader here and a big airfield behind me - bring him over
and he can practise in peace

Perhaps it's more down to the fact that a lot of schools offer to keep
on training you week after week until you've passed? I don't think
they really want a non-paying pupil clogging up the system when they
could be charging a new one full price for the same effort.

I was ever so slightly wobbly on my U-Turn and the instructor said
that he would not issue a pass certificate until I did it properly. I
don't see how "coming off" could mean a pass. Perhaps it wasn't as
bad as he said it was, and was just a stumble when he nearly dropped
    the bike while stationary?

This is not unusual, especially if someone is nervous. I been with several
who I had to put on a scoot who then went on to do DAS with no problems.
Get a bike and get some familiarisation lessons, these are quite cheap and
free if you get the bike from a dealer.

We'll bear that in mind. Might just be better to get an MR2 and become a
    hairdresser.

One slight snag, he dunt want to get on a geared bike *yet*

He's gonna try to get an autoscoot (pah) and get some practice in. I hope
it would not be too presumtious to ask for the use of your field?
