    hi all in this NG,
im a newbie here and am after some advice on a bike purchase.
have been looking at the hornet 600 and was wondering what people
thought of that bike. i'm probably going to spend about 2500-3000
including clothing and lock. also what alternatives would you suggest.
i dont want anything very fast as this will be my first roadbike, and
maybe something with a fairing or storage will be an advantage, i maybe
doing the occasional commute to work ,but i just love the look of the
    hornet.
looking forward to getting my first bike, take care all.

emerged from their own little world to say
I like the 600 Hornet. Great bike for hooning around on. Tiring to ride
as you have to rev the tits off it and concentrate on being in the right
    gear to make good progress.

If you plan to make any long journeys then consider something else[0].
As well as being tiring it has very poor fuel consumption[1] exasperated
by a comicly small tank. Consequently you have to stop for fuel every
    100 miles or so.

[0] Fazer, SV650, Bandit & Transalp are better distance bikes
[1] this might have something to do with the way I rode it as it was a
    loan bike from a dealer

Hmm, after following PJ this w/e on his 600 Fazer (the incredibly long
tank-range demon) I'd be more inclined to suggest the Fazer over the
Hornet. It's handling is fine, it goes *bloody well*, and the tank
    range is just heooouuuge.

Ditto - on the last leg of the Frech run, I did something like 150 miles
to home at 80-90 cruising speeds and still had around 30 miles range
    left.

Very practical too with lots of space under the seat for your lock plus
waterproofs. 2.5k will get a very nice one.

I filled up about 25 miles out of Dover, had to fill up again before
hitting the toll road, went out this afternoon (I was a bit naughty
though) [1] and went onto reserve just as I was getting home. Which is
a PITA as there are no garages with petrol nearby, the car can be
considered to be unuseable as the head gasket has gone, as well as a
gasket at the engine end of the exhaust.

    [1] I was surprised that a CBR600RR couldn't keep up with me [2], then
I managed to go airborn over the bridge. That's not happened before as
it is right after a tight left-hander..oops. I didn't mean to do that!

[2] Quite funny when I was waiting at the traffic lights and he pulled
up beside me with an 'alright mate', then 'ah, I just assumed you were
a bloke with long hair'. Not too sure how to take that, actually.

Ever so, the damn Fiat is costing me hand over fist atm, I should've
    stuck with a Jap marque.

Oh well, another 'reason' to use the bike for work before they start
the 2nd faze of road-works at Switch Island.
