Airbrushing

    Hi All,

Daughter has asked if she could have a go airbrushing. I think she's
got the idea to do her own A2 bike when she get's one (as it will
probably be summat cheap / cheerful. She wants a 2008 Ninja 250R but
    that's another story!) ;-)

I've got one of those little Bambi compressors (75/150)

    http://www.bambi-air.co.uk/about-us.html

which is nice and quiet and I guess up to the job (pressure / cfm) but
I'm not sure what would be a good starting point airbrush wise?

Doing a bit of Googling the Badger 150 seems to be ok and better if I
can pick one up second hand etc (at least I know I can get spares /
extras to suit etc). Loads of unknown brands on eBay pretty cheap.

She's pretty good at art and can see her also enjoying doing stuff
    with T shirts etc.

    All the best ..

p.s. Also I'm looking for something to spray some Weller steel wheels
.... would an airbrush with large nozzle cope with Hammerite (SM
    Primer) if I wasn't in a rush?

    No.

    Things to bear in mind

    1. Hammerite always looks shit
    2. Smoothrite looks like smoothrite, IYSWIM
    3. The special thinners for spraying that type of paint is expensive
    4. Use a brush

    Ok ..
But in this instance the freshly shot blasted and zinc plated wheels
were in a pretty rough state and are only for a utility kitcar (which
    also looks shit).
    I do, ta. ;-)
The 'Special Metals Primer' is supposed to be applied neat so that may
    also exclude the airbrush idea?
I still may, but these 8 spokes are full of nasty returns, holes and
edges and I can see runs being inevitable (but no real issue I guess
given my reply to 1 ).

So what about a small gravity HVLP touch up spray gun? I was thinking
ahead to be able to spray other little bits, especially when the paint
only comes in tins (rather than aerosol).

    All the best ..

  4. Have you thought of having them powder coated

They're crap. Single action so you can't adjust the amount of paint OR air
"on the fly" and they're to small to do a sizeable area without it looking
like shite. A Badger 400 for large area's and for small area's what you need
    is this.. Item 350087069877

Or ping Monz, coz he's got a raft of airbrushing gear he wants rid of.
Perfect for that sort of stuff, despite it being advertised as "nail
    painting" equipment.
No and even if it was, it'd be bloody expensive. Hammerite can only be
thinned with their thinners (expensive) and you have to re-coat VERY
quickly, you can't flat out runs easily and if you leave it too long between
coats, the fucking following coat will totally **** up the previous one. And
    it'll still look like shite.

Buy yourself some 2 pack ratttle cans (yes, they're available) and bomb ****
out of the wheels. carefully of course :)

Yes, I have Steve but I must admit I'm not really a fan of the
coating. I mean, it's ideal for many things but I'm not sure these
sort of wheels are one of them (I have several sets and they are all
going the same way). I built the kitcar 18 years ago and painted the
chassis with chassis paint <g>. That is still intact and the powder
coat started falling off the wheels in great slabs 10 years ago.

Plus when you do up the wheel nuts it tends to start the cracking /
    falling off process. :-(

Then there was the cost (it was enough to get the remains of the PC
off in the first place). It often has to be burnt first, all adding to
    the cost etc.

And paint can be touched up.

    All the best ..

Oh? If we are talking about the 150 here I thought they were dual
action (maybe there are different versions)?
    That's nice, but 150 quid?
    And cheap enough. ;-)
Ooo, that could be a solution, thanks.
Hmm, well I've only painted the stuff on with a brush in the past and
the finish has always been ok for the applications I have chosen. The
last things of any worth being my 8' square garage door assembly [1]
and the paint is still on them and looking ok.
Well, I would probably have gone for some aerosol Hammerite (even
hammered) but they don't do the 'Special Metal Primer' in that format.
I'm not sure how well even 2pack would stick to zinc without a
suitable primer (it's a bit like galv in that respect I think)?. Or
maybe I could just use an acid-etch rattle before the 2 pack?

    All the best ..

    T i m

    [1] It was a 8' sq up_and_over and I fabricated a new frame with 6'6"
bi-fold and personal doors (so I could keep the heat in during the
winter and still be able to open the whole front up) plus opening
    lights above.

The 100 is dual action, the 150 is single. The 150-3 is a dual action.
Well I don't set the prices, hence my link to eBay.
    I'd say so.
IIRC, he's got quite a few brushes and possibly still got a compressor too.
I know he's got an Aerograph 63 airbrush, which is a good tool.
A garage door isn't a bike though and people don't expect garage doors to
look like they belong on something pretty.
So wallop it with a couple of light coats of "Acid Etch". Again, available
in rattle cans. I use it all the time and it's well up to any job.
Ooops :) Mmmm, maybe an idea :)
    Flash ****:)

Ah, thanks. I thought it could be something bizarre like that.
Well indeed. I couldn't see any 400's on eBay though (link?).
I've emailed him at the address on his band address on his sig, should
that get through? If you think not, my addy works here if you want to
send him mine or me his please Beav?
Quite right, these Weller 8 spoke 6J steel and rust pitted wheels are
going on a shed of a kitcar not a bike I'm afraid. My mate sprayed
the wheels on his ZX6R with black chassis paint and they looked
    brilliant.
As do I for all the ally stuff.
I'd like to think so. ;-)

All the best and thanks again ..

For any job that's "Badger 400" sized, there's an alternative from Machine
Mart. "Touch-up" guns they're called and they're bloody good for the money.
    About 25 quidish IIRC.

If it's "Glyn Senior" then probably. "Glyn [at] gsxr1000 [dot] co [dot] you
    kay"

It's actually fucking good stuff is chassis black. And long lasting too.
Perfect for that and strangely, for refinishing guitars too.
I read and post "on the fly" instead or reading the lot then picking through
    it. Daft idea I know.
    No worries might.:)

Yeah, I'd flicked though those and guess at least there might be a
chance of getting some spare / extra nozzles etc, pus they aren't far
away (but the parking is shite). I might be able to get trade on a
Sealy banded one, probably the same thing but again, some chance of
    spares and locally.
Hmm, I tried monz @ from an old sig of his but that bounced but I'll
    try that one thanks.
Oooerr! Daughter wanted me to do some stuff on her Squier Strat [1],
like a chequer-plate pick guard, never quite got roundtuit. ;-)
Nope, fine idea Beav, do it myself .. ;-)All the best ..

    T i m

[1] There's another example of us being cautious re going over_the_top
on something. A mate was about to leave a Fender distributor and
managed to get me the Squier Strat and P bass at cost. They both hang
in her room and get played now_and_again (in phases) so spending any
more money on such would have been a real waste.

Yup, ta (nice lad n that). He's gonna send it down by courier .. I
didn't fancy 300+ miles on the CB Two Fifty just to save the
    difference!
    Ok, it's a deal. ;-)

Straight PG tips ok or that fancy Lou Grade or Shitstrapdong stuff?

And as it happens we do! ;-)

And when the Europeans started bringing their produce over, many would
end up down here not realising it was actually not a short cut to
    their final destination. :-(

Not been unknown for me to be out there at 4am getting them turned
round without them removing too many wing mirrors!

I guess is was bad enough being lost down a urban dead end but also
being Polish / Spanish / Italian and in a LHD HGV ...
