I have just joined the local advanced motorcycle group... not because I want
to show how good I am, but because I'm crap.

Anyway I should be assigned an observer/instructor in a few weeks, but they
have told me that they don't use intercoms for directions but just rely on
me watching out for the observers indicators in my mirrors, well this I find
a little (a lot really) worrying, I have enough trouble looking where I'm
going let alone watching out for his indicators.

So my point is.... how the hell is this gonna work?, I'll be lost in
    minutes:-(

    TIA, D

  2. where are you? if you arent happy join another group.

our group (herts and beds) use intercoms for the observed rides but on
the test its done by rear observation.

I found this really difficult too and got lost several times. he
waited for me to realise he wasnt there and go back to the last place
I knew he was. The major one of these was when I went onto the A1M and
had to go five miles to turn round and come back!!

In the group I joined they had several standard destinations. Before
you set out, everyone knows where the destination is. I used to take a
map so I could look up the route first then more or less ride it from
memory. As a fall back, you could always check your mirro at a junction
to see if they were indicating.

Of course, this depends partly on your knowledge of your area, and the
willingness of the observer to tell you the route in advance.

  5. It's normal to give the associate (verbally) a route to follow. However, if
he/she approaches a roundabout or junction and can't remember where to go,
then yes, a glance in the mirror to see if the observer is indicating may be
a good idea. Don't worry, it works ok most of the time, and if you take the
wrong route, who cares? As long as you get lost safely, it doesn't matter!

The use of intercoms is a slightly tricky subject. Everyone is paranoid
about legal liability these days, so if the observer tells you something and
in doing so, distracts you, and you have an accident... As far as I'm
aware, in our local group the senior observers use them to give a commentary
on their own riding, not to comment on an associate's riding.

Personally, I can't be bothered with them, and am quite happy doing things
    the old-fashioned way. :)

    Bye from Rick

It works OK but it's certainly not as good as intercoms. We've had
intercoms pack in when doing CBT and we still mange to get the students
    home.

  7. although we do use intercoms its only for directions and not for
    giving feedback.

Hmm, the only time I've used intercoms for training was with Dave Corden...
and then they killed my ears :)

It's not that hard to look in the mirrors surely???

The intercoms we use are pretty poor at times - but as we tell the
students the intercom doesnt control your bike. In police advanced
training they dont use the fitted radios at all. In practice if you
are doing rear obs at the correct points you shouldnt miss the
instructor indicating for a junction etc.

  10. Stop thinking you are crap. Just get someone in the know to evaluate
your riding. You might be pleasantly surprised.
You are imagining a situation that you think you can't cope with. I've
done AIM training based solely on observation and it was no problem at
all. You very quickly adapt and as JP says elsewhere in the thread if
you observing at the right time you'll see all the indications anyway.

One of the most basic aspects of doing this training will be to get to
observe and route plan properly - why do you think they use a technique
that forces you to use rearward observation at the appropriate time?

You don't normally ride with an intercom providing instructions to you
all the time - you use your brain and your eyes to work out where you
    are going.

Now calm down and enjoy your training when it gets going.
