FOAD padlock and chain is always your best security.

And on the (slightly off from your post, mind you) subject of alarms, with
you being of a amateur radio/electronics background, this may be an idea for
you to build in your spare time. A friend of mine built one for his
pushbike, and when I get around to getting my arse in gear I intend to build
    one myself..

2 PMR radios. One of them has the guts pulled out of it and fitted into a
box that goes underneath your seat or wherever is out of the way. You have
your tilt/vibration/oscillator capacitance detector (as used in those touch
lamps you get) wired into a latch that keys the transmitter up on the PMR
for a set amount of time. My thinking on this is 30 seconds or so. Maybe
have the first 5 seconds of this so it transmits a siren sound to alert your
attention, then have it leave the microphone open for the remainder of the
time. This is so you can listen in on whatever is going on around your bike.
I imagine that amping the mic will help in this. You could even wire it in
to a normal siren if you wish it to go off as a usual alarm does, however
this would defeat the object of being able to listen in.

End result? A nice portable alarm system that, even if you are out of
earshot of the normal siren, you will still be alerted to somebody fucking
with your precious bike. Perfect for the likes of whilst shopping in Tescos,
for example, where with all the din of harrassed shoppers and the in-store
music etc, you wouldn`t have a hope in hell of hearing an alarm going off
    outside.

Obviously, there are a few more tweaks that can be added into this idea,
this is just the basic background for the idea.

    Have fun!

    Thanks....

I had already given doing something similar some thought, but insureco
approval would be difficult on a DIY alarm. I designed my own car
alarms long before you could buy the clever ones in the shops.

Never going far from the bike whilst out, I thought the pager system
would suit me well... Always assuming these are reliable alarm systems.
