Alarms and other security measures

    hi all,

I'm about to re-enter the motorcycling world 12 months after my bike was
stolen. (I can't take it anymore...)

I am living in the same house which doesn't have a garage, and exposes
the bike to the street (it will be parked on the veranda which is where
the old bike got stolen from) So I'm obviously pretty keen to get an
alarm or some other type of security system in an attempt to stop it
getting stolen again. Can people comment of their experiences using
after market security systems - what are the different types of alarms
available - eg, ones that call your mobile, or can track the bike
through gps etc etc... and what sort of prices am I looking at?

How effective do people believe alarms to be? Although the dickheads
that stole my bike were probably taking a huge risk (i was sleeping in
the room next to the veranda at the time) I didn't have an alarm...and
if I did, it would have woken me up, and i could have got the 3 iron out.

Also - does having an alarm reduce your insurance premiums?

Thanks in advance for your comments and/or answers.

AM alarm is a start , and one of those huge unbreakable locks and a
suitable multistrand wire cable// that will stop the kiddies and
    amatuers.

Do they make an alarm which will call out your name?

sound of their name than to a beep,"

about 10k, please speak up. (and Jules, sorry mate, not interested)

    A 2000 GSX-R750 is more desirable than an 85 model R80RT with 60,000kms
on the clock, just my opinion.....(he's come the rock solid BMW
    100,000kms thread)

I DO need help about which alarm to choose though, so if you can offer
    some, please don't hesitate.

If you are alert, you don't need to be alarmed!

I have a Mongoose Striker alarm/immobiliser fitted to the TL and its
great.... very loud when it goes off.
It also has a remote start which I can never work out why. Only good for
starting the bike in the garage whilst still getting gear on in house... hmm
    maybe thats why its there.
It hasnt been stolen yet, but i suppose a professional will take it anyway,
    just stops the amatuers.

Is there an outside light on the veranda? If so, replace it with a security
light. With the twin spotlight unit you could extend one of the lights into
    the bedroom.

Just dont set it to ultra-sensitive otherwise you'll have trouble sleeping
    :)

Checkout ABUS locks, chains and U-Locks. They have a simple rating
system (1 to 25) to give an indication of protection. The 25 rated
items are heavy - perfect for what you need, but not so good for
    taking on the road.

If you can chain it to something difficult to cut thru even better.

My experience with alarms and insurance is they don't care if one is
fitted so they must think they are not worth the trouble. I still will
get one at some stage but unfortunatly there seems to be little
    incentive for it.

    Cheers, Tim.

How about getting a battle engineer to mount a couple of self acquiring
turrets around the yard? They work pretty well against the nme.

    is a good one though!

  15. No need to apologise, seeing how there are any number of parallels between
the false security provided by a bike alarm ("But, I paid heaps of money for
a top-notch security system. How can my bike be gone?") and that which comes
from nodding at a televised Steve Liebmann strolling along a beach ("But,
we've allocated heaps of extra money to national security and passed these
robust new powers-of-arrest laws. What do you mean cunts are strolling into
the Customs HQ and walking out with servers?")... if you can pop two bubbles
of blissful ignorance with the one pin, you might as well do it.
