  1. Blimey. We'd all be pissed all day long once that got into the wild. A
short and glorious party then dead.

Solar power - just build a great big array out in space, catching the
energy, and microwave it back to a catching station nearer to earth.
Then spacehook to get the power down to ground level.

    apples-v-oranges alert.

In the first place, what do you mean the energy to run the process
would come from the process? That just sounds like nonsense to me. If
you were able to combine CO2 and H2O in to alcohol chemically, this
would be an endothermic reaction i.e. you need to put energy into the
equation for it to work. Why do you think this would be different nano-
mechanically? Unless you're also proposing powering the thing via the
    Casimir effect or something[1].

Secondly, my "bug idea" is not zero sum - I am proposing that we use a
"fuel" that is not of practical use to us (soil) which can "power" the
bacteria which produce the alcohol (which we can use). The net effect
is a reduction in the world's stock of soil and an increase in the
alcohol we can use for fuel. In your case you are proposing "free
energy" with no loss of resource either.

[1] and if you've got a proposal for a working ZPM, why bother with
    the alcohol?

I really don't see any issue with deep burial of fission cycle waste. OK so
something *might* leach to the surface in 100,000 years. The proposed UK
site would put that under 200m of ocean. It really really does not mater.
And that *might* is about one chance in 100,000,000.

As I intimated, the engineering issue is building modular reactors and
processing facilities. The design work just hasn't been done.

I had a hollow laugh reading the French nuclear power strategy. 2015
European Pressurised Water Reactors (EPR). 2020 Gen IV Advanced Gas Cooled
Reactors and Sodium Cooled Fast Breeder cycle.
    Who invented these fucking things.
The betrayal of British engineering capability by successive post war
governments in favour of a short term Welfare State for spongebob and
    friends could make you weep.

That's all very well, but where am I going to grow my spuds when you've
used up all the soil, eh?

We should. EPR isn't a modular design though optimised for decommissioning.
    Well not yet.

    a) you'll be so pissed on all the cheap alcohol you won't need the
    spuds.
    b) I'm sure we can grow spuds hydroponically anyway.

  10. I think they are worried about what might happen if the rocket carrying
it crashes before it achieves orbit.

  11. You'd be able to afford it. In *huge* quantities. Enough to give
everyone in UKRM enough alcohol to be blotto from now until they
    die[1].

And speaking of ZPM's does anyone else get irritated by Stargate
Atlantis[2] when they talk about ZPM's running out?

    Phil.

[1] Which wouldn't be that long in the presence of huge amounts of free
    alcohol..
[2] I mean by more than the childish plots, infantile use of technology
    and below-par acting?

Why would it bother you? It's not as if the rest of the basic premise
    makes any sense anyway.
If it pisses you off so much, why do you watch it? It's shite.

  16. And c) biofuels. Seriously. So the poor will starve so we can fill our
    tanks.

    Seems OK to me.

I'm missing something here. The only energy in the soil that bacteria
can use that I know of is the bio-matter in the topsoil and that's
only a small proportion of the total mass. AIUI when that's used, all
you have is sand & pebbles etc., which is then barren and no use to
anyone. Is there some other source of energy?
