Only if the bugs can safely contain a fusion reaction, I guess.

Sure, and I'll get the patent application in the post just as soon as
I've finished this bottle of <checks> 'Brateau Moreau' shampagnee.
Verr acceptable, it is, specially with the bottle of Aldi-special
Montepulciano[1] mixed in over dinner half-way through it.

[1] Which is _still_ only EU1.89 a bottle over here.

I don't see why not. Do you think nanotechnology's going to mature
    quicker than genetic engineering?

    true enough.
no. Mainly because I can conceive of a SF ZPM design which would run
    out[1]

[1] say it needs a particular decaying isotope as part of the process
to extract the free energy - when the enough of the isotope has
decayed, the ZPM has "run out".

yes, but, some bacteria (those around deep undersea thermal vents for
example) can do chemosynthesis without the need for sunlight.
well, yes - the actual mechanism isn't the issue - what we're talking
about effectively is using light to catalyse an endothermic reaction.
indeed. Engineers have to do /some/ work to justify their existence.

I can take plentiful compounds such as red meat, beans and best bitter
    and produce combustible products.

    Does that help?

i don't think this is the sf dream of nanotech at all. maybe the sf
dream of transmutation of matter, or the sf dream of i-want-every-
    gadget-on-deep-space-nine.
