how is molecular-level re-assignment "transmutation of matter"?

You'd need a femtomachine to do that.

if you re-read, the SF dream Champ mentioned don't include no steekin'
    milk.

Something's always puzzled me when I come across these things in books,
where they are described as having to be built on the equator. Why?

So the centripetal acceleration is at right angles to the point of anchor in
both longitude and latitude making the shortest tether line

The Earth rotates. Imagine one built at the South Pole: would it stand up
straight, or whirl around perpendicular to the axis of rotation?

that's the bit that's nearest to space.

Seriously (though the above is true), simple mechanics mean it needs
to be as near to the equator as possible. Imagine a spinning sphere
with a couple of weighted strings, one attached to it's equator, and
one not - which direction to the strings point?

  14. Orbital mechanics. Geostationary orbits are over the equator (or within
a band covering the equator and the area either side).

because, as per platy, ben, Phil and my explanation, it's blindingly
