....and we're going to encase it in concrete to protect it from tourists
crashing airplanes into it - all the way up!

err, yes, but the general idea is not to have it curved.

    ITYM "axis"
I can't remember whether anyone has previously mentioned this explicitly,
but the whole system is in geostationary orbit - the counterweight is there
to ensure that the centre of mass of the system is at the correct altitude
    for a geostationary orbit.

A geostationary orbit has to be over the equator. If you put the it in any
other plane, at the same altitude and therefore with the same orbital
period, the satellite (or elevator in this case) will wander to the north
    and south.

Couldn't you just put the base station on wheels? You could even use it
as a transport or power generation system.

    Genius!

  10. Or the fact that the space end is in a (relatively) fixed position.

I'd be fun to watch you try. Well, actually it would be utterly tedious,
but flicking through your blog might be mildly amusing...

Day 3: 97 km. God, this is tedious. Seems to go on for ever.

Day 11: 302 km. Air much thinner. Definitely getting steeper. Very cold
    now.

Day 15: 359 km. bleedng frm ears nd nse Cnt remebre why im here V steep

    No, you're barking.

The Equator is about 40,000 km long. Only about 6,000 km of that is land,
and it's mostly rainforest, mountains, deserts, jungles etc.

    You want a boat.

Which way does it taper? And why?

<guesses> Near the earth is the tension through the cable counteracted
to an extent by gravity and so it can be thinner at the earth end?
