Well, it was only after watching a TV documentary on SOE many years later, during which the failed attempt was described including showing the bomb, how it was made up, and how it functioned, did I realise that it was those that I had destroyed years before. The TV signals are well past Alpha Centauri and I can't get them back.
While I agree with most of what you said (the Germans thought much as the US does now - that the higher technology will always win and ignored the fact that higher tech tends to break more) this bit I disagree with - Hitler was the primary architect of Barbarossa and was very heavily involved in planning and objective setting. He also refused to allow the army to withdraw to regroup once it was obvious that their initial goals couldn't be met - something which led to them having to spend a winter in the field that they were utterly unequipped to cope with rather than falling back to strongpoints to rest and re-arm. This was the design philosophy that the US followed with the tanks like the Grant and Sherman - produce lots of cheap, easily-manufactured average tanks that can be operated after only a short amount of training. Who cares if it takes 4 of them to knock out a German tank if there are 10 times as many of them as the German tanks? (Apart from the crews concerned that is..). Phil.
And as I've said, crucially he halted the advance, and then diverted forces south. This resulted in the massive encirclement at Kiev, but delayed the critical push on Moscow. Anyway <stretches>, we can debate this till the cows come home, and like the '1940 - could Germany have conquered Britain?' debate, it'll always remain a huge what-if. So who's hoping for what, for Christmas? I've dropped heavy hints that I want a proper motorcycle workbench/lift, but I don't hold out much hope.
A bit like the Egyptian MiGs in the 1967 5-day war - the Israelis timed their ascent into the radar coverage so that the pilots would just have time to get into their aircraft and power up the engines to make a nice target for the infra-red homing missiles.. Phil
It's annoying me - you've quoted me here and I can't find the posting I supposedly made and which you quote as an attribution!
illiterate chauvinistic feminist!!! ;^) -- Keith Schiffner History does not record anywhere at any time a religion that has any rational basis. Religion is a crutch for people not strong enough to stand up to the unknown without help. But, like dandruff, most people do have a religion and spend time and money on it and seem to derive considerable pleasure from fiddling with it. Robert Heinlein
Verdigris wrote Rather reminds me of a very early sig I used to use on the interweb "All I want is world peace and personal prosperity in my own lifetime but not necessarily in that order."
Absolutely guaranteed. My missus asked me when the next VAT free night is at Machine Mart so she can go and get one for 300 quid rather than 350. Unfortunately, it's not until after Christmas, so I've got to wait. Still, one's arriving. -- Beav VN 750 Zed 1000 OMF# 19
