  1. Get quotefix for Outlook Express and it is ok. It is about the only
windows program I miss since moving to the mac.

    :)

But I have some tragic news for you, Fraser. I nod at Harley riders,
and they (mostly) nod back at this demented Hyosung rider. :))))

Ha! I ALWAYS nod!!! I'm surprised by the number of sportsbike riders who
don't nod back ;-P (I have noticed, however, that more Harley riders nod at
    me these days, heh heh!)

  4. I agree there... But who's to say what window size you're viewing the post in?

OE has the option of forcing line breaks (indeed, it's enabled by default at 76 characters), but that breaks (no pun intended) more than it fixes.

It's up to the news _reader_ to wrap lines according to the viewspace available to it - on a narrow screen it can wrap at 20 characters, and on a wide one at 500 characters.

Is what Gerry was pointing to. Version 3.3 was freeware if you're happy
to do without a kill file and a few other features in the paid for
version. Just means you can't filter out George's posts.

Mate, it's easy. You view the "message list", and only click on
messages from the few people/headers you're interested in. Skip the
    rest. Works for me. :)

OE is a dead product for some many years now and doesn't work with
Windows 7. The replacement free program is Windows Live Mail, which is
seriously in need of something akin to quotefix. Is there a quotefix
    for Live Mail, anyone?

  12. WLM is in serious need of a bullet through the head, but just like Outlook (not OE) it'll survive despite itself - because the average user just gobbles up what they're served.

I've sadly had to convert far too many corporate users to WLM during the process of moving to Windows 7, simply because every other e-mail programme is "too different" for them.

I'll admit though, there's not much else out there which "just fits" usability-wise. Thunderbird's great, but it takes real effort to get your head around the different methodologies used if you're a "power user." Evolution does a great job, but the user interface feels like it's held together with really cheap sticky tape.

There are of course many others out there to play with, but it's seeming nigh impossible to find one which does all of the following:
    - Handle dozens of e-mail accounts in a way that's actually managable (no, I don't mean "common inbox" crap, mean actually handling multiple accounts properly).
    - Handle newsgroups.
    - Not go away for a few minutes to "think about it" every time you try to do something.
    - Not collapse when you want to do use a not-very-commonly-used feature.

  13. I nod at everyone. Even scooter riders. But generally only get the nod
back from guys on sportsbikes. I was on the Thruxton yesterday and got
a nod back from a Harley rider which surprised me.

The whole point of a kill file is so that you don't have to manually
    filter posts.

I bought the full version years ago (when in version 2 IIRC), gave me a
    free update to 3.3.

Now using Pan in Ubuntu, works quite nicely.

Well, I'm so happy for you I just crapped my pants, Bill.

For me, given the paltry amount of traffic here, I'm quite happy to do
it the "hard" way. Different strokes for different folks, eh...

    Stay upright, Bill.

    One reason??

Optus has previously provided usenet service (Optus Newsgroup) to
customers. However, following evaluation of the services that we offer
to our customers, and the declining usage of usenet by our customers
over the past several years, it is no longer viable to continue to
provide this service. As a result, the usenet service is in the
process of being disabled and removed.

This service will close as of 21/11/2011.

If you still want to use usenet, there are a number of commercial
usenet providers that will be able to provide this service to you.

took me days to find out why it was fucked up
