    1. Dani Pedrosa.

The list of those who used a helicopter to get up is, I understand,
    somewhat longer.

Ouch. Is that a Champion petard fluttering near the summit?

If Dani Pedrosa went up to the Midi he went a **** of a long way round
if he stayed in the Gouter overnight.

If you go from the Midi the normal thing to do is to kip at the new
Cosmiques hut (1) and then cut across the bottom of Mont Blanc du
Tacul (cross bergschrund here) and then traverse round Mont Maudit and
carry on to storm Mont Blanc. You'd join the 'tourist route' coming up
from the Gouter somewhere around the Valot hut and then use the same
    track to the summit.
    No chance.

    (1) Proper climbers climb back up the rib and bang on the doors at the
Midi claiming they've missed the last telepherique so they're allowed
to kip in the tunnels and then sneak out at midnight. Doing this means
you don't need to blow cash on the hut and you don't need to carry a
    tent or a bivvy bag.

Sure - as Jeremy has already pointed out, I confused the Gouter and
    Cosmique huts.
    heh. Climbers are such pikeys.

This *is* the tourist route these days - the Gouter hut is so sqalid, and
the Grand Couloir is so dangerous, that guides generally prefer to go up
from the col du Midi. They still come down via the Gouter though.

You don't actually climb the couloir, you cross it. It's a bit of a
    bowling alley.

But you only have to run across the couloir at the bottom (1) and then
you're on the Gouter rib which isn't as bad. I suppose a lot depends
on the time of year and snow conditions but I'd be a bit suspicious of
the guides motives because the fuckers might be on a bit of an earner
for shoving people towards the Cosmiques.

    (1) Hold your rucksack above your head to deflect stone fall and run
like ****, it's not far and there used to be a big rock in the middle
you could hide behind if you got scared.
