An old chestNUT

  1. It's possible the smaller rattle gun shocked things enough to do some of
the job, but the 3/4" would have done it I'm sure.
Essentially a bit of friction welding, imo. I'm fairly sure if you were
to microscopically examine the thread surfaces you'd see a fair bit of
    tearing.

Hmm, I probably should have forked out the extra for 3/4 drive but I
already had a couple of impact sockets in 1/2.
I suppose the 'rattle' may, if nothing else, have allowed the plus gas
to "reach the parts". PG really is the dogs bollox of penetrating oil
IMHO. Increasingly difficult to find though.

It's one of those days though. Looked closely at the sprocket/torsion
damper assembly and manual to see that a circlip needs to come off. My
pikey little old convertable internal/external thingy is not up to the
job. Never had to tackle a 55mm diameter, thick, strong, bastard before.
Ho hum - another trip out. Now I come to look closely at the old
sprocket it isn't really in too bad nick either.

  3. Useful tip - bus and truck repairers have 1" rattle guns with compressor
power to match for those things that are really stuck.

No doubt they have fucking great big circlip pliers as well. I would
quite gladly have replaced mine with less pikey ones, but all I can find
locally are poxy little Draper jobs. Nice interchangeable prongs, but
just not enough stroke to get the job done (no puns please this is
    UKRM).

Currently trying to prise the bastard out while the sprocket is held in
a vice, using what I have got and selection of sharp instruments. Trip
to casualty in the offing no doubt.

If the chap who used to service my SOCs in the old days was still in
business I would run round to him with it. Note to Steve H - except the
Alfa. His comment when I proudly turned up with the 2.5 V6 75 Cloverleaf
at his workshop ? "You must be fucking mad. No way am I touching that
fucking thing." Fortunately I found a local Alfa guru, but that is
    another story.

Come to think of it, when I am on site tomorrow I can pop across to
'Meteor'. A lot of my cash went their way for a few years persuading an
MoT tester to issue a certificate for a 1984 Talbot Express based camper
van. They owe me a favour.

Bad form to follow up my own post but it is DONE!

With the aid of much cursing, old circlip pliers, an ancient 'Opinel'
lock knife I found when walking the hill at Mont Verdun in '83, and a
    screwdriver.

Re-assembly was a reversal of the above procedure.

    No slashed wrists (even intentional).

Thanks to all who offered hints and tips, and a very funny
'divertissement' from Pip - must be a white hat thing ;-)

Time for something long and chilled (containing alcohol and taken by
    mouth).

I've just spotted this - no, the300Kg wasn't Nick, it was the all-up
weight of the ZZR plus LOz, lifted at the business end of the scaffold
    pole.

I always forget about gravity, he said lightheadedly.
I did think that, but it seems like an enormous mass/weight/force to
me. I'm stuck with 100 pound feet being quite a lot, see.

    Kewl. Persistence pays dividends.
It's often surprising what you'll dig out of the old toolbox when your
back's against the wall. I know what you mean about the lock knife, I
have a WWI British Army issue penknife which has a somewhat unlikely
can opener next to the blade. It must be made of some decent steel,
as it has pried, levered and persuaded many reluctant fittings apart
in ways that the manufacturer could never expect.

As to the circlip dilemma, I've had bodgery success with three drifts
and a Mole grip: fit two drifts into the 'eyes' of the circlip, wedge
the third drift perpendicularly in between them to act as a fulcrum,
held with the (gloved) left hand; then apply Moles and squeeze the
drifts together, closing the circlip. It will work to open a circlip
too, by squeezing the other side of the fulcrum. Takes a bit of
jiggling to get all the bits into a functional position, but sufficed
to strip an Alfa gearbox that seemed to be held together exclusively
    by inaccessible circlips.
    Hope you enjoyed it ;-)

Excellent! 'White hat' cunning at it's best.

Putting it back on was, if anything, more hairy. Was it going to break,
or more likely fly off into the furthest recesses of the garage, amongst
the detritus of previous similar man machine interactions, never to be
    seen again?

Just remember, 100 Nm is about right for car wheel-nuts. Sorted.

It's the compressor that does the work not the driver. In all honesty
anything less than 120cfm isn't worth a **** for sustained use and you
just won't get that from a home use compressor.
