And 23 thousand bucks doesn't sound expensive

I remember that. 200,000,000$ or something like that. That was just the
    starting bid, wasn't it?

Indeed, it was the spelling that caught my eye.

I think (waits for Weggie) that there aren't any air-worthy ones left
after the Manchester accident. If money were no object I'd get one built
    from scratch.

Heh. Err, her sticky-out bits had "Lego" moulded on them?

    Erm no.

Her "sticky out bits" resembled a relief map of the london underground
due to the prominent, erm, "veinage".
    Her face was somewhat pockmarked.

But I loved her, so **** right off ;)

    Hmm, probably.
Mind you, I was only 19 when I dumped her for the current Mrs DanL, so
as far as I was concerned taking it up the council gritter was solely
reserved for "them who garden on an incline".

Strangely enough I saw her about 10 years ago walking down the high
street in Bicester, and she looked quite fit, although nowhere near as
fit as the current Mrs DanL (in case she reads this).

  15. That was mostly built under licence - Buchons were ME109s, licence
built, and Spain built 300-odd JU52s[1].

The Heinkels used in Battle Of Britain were Spanish air force stock too,
though I dunno if they were Spanish- or German-built.

[1] France built some, too. Amazing aircraft, the Tante Ju[2].
[2] In a previous job, decades ago, I knew a keen photographer who took
one of the best b/w shots of an aircraft I've ever seen. It was of a
piece of Ju52 wing, in bright sunlight, with a shadow diagonally across
it. It incorporated the elements of the corrugated metal, the edge of
the wing, the shadow and the black cross logo. It was a superb study in
angles and I *wish* I had a print of it.

  16. Probably wasn't when new....

Actually, the MiG-21 was remarkably solid, IIRC.

Well they were called CASA 111s, so I'd guess Spanish.

I recall reading an account of a couple of East European Fishbeds
being met and escorted to the UK after the Cold War: apparently they
had no modern navigation aids at all. The RAF blokes were impressed at
how well they found their way around.

  20. Do you mean that? CASA 111 was a Heinkel 1-11, not a Ju-52? (Sorry, I've
probably not read the rest of the thread properly.)
