And another SOB....

  1. In the form of a *gorgeous* Yamaha XS650 Special, all original, 1981,
19,000 miles and a lovely runner.

US import, so that silly 85mph speedo and wired-in lights, but never
    mind.

£500. The temptation is incredibly strong to keep it and flog the
GPz550. Anyone want to give me £600 for the GPz (which is what it owes
me)? Details there: 45,000 miles, 1990 model, all stock barring a Laser
4-1 can, bloody nice order, T&T until the end of the year, little sports
    rack, some spares.

    SW London.

  3. It's a grand's worth all day long. Probably nearer £1300-1400.

Why - are you interested? I'd let it go for a grand.

Couldn't justify a grand, ATM - that's with the pile earmarked for the new
big bike.... when I decide...... eventually...

Stu's Divvy9 may be a prospect, but even with all the kit, it isn't worth
more than 1500 to me - and he'll just laugh at that...

A 3L1 then? Not half bad at all. I've had 9 XS650s in total over the years
form one of yours to a Halco/Hagon hybrid of 1053cc! Superb engines in
frames made of old bits of steel conduit.
Sell the GPz certainly. Keep the Yam if it's as nice as you say. There's
always more Kwaks about. Nibe XS650s are becoming rare and a bit dear now.

  6. That's the temptation. The XS650 is in superb nick, and it'll be the
    fourth I've owned.

The most memorable was one, back in the mid-1980s, which had a Hagon
    750cc kit in it :))

It'd be worth getting. If you keep it clean it's not going down in value
in the same way an anonymous 7 year old UJM will.

You can sell it to put towards whatever big machine your after at a later
    date.

  8. Bit bigger than what I'm looking for. If the thieves couldn't
lift the RG or tha Katana, they'd never shift a GPz550!

I once got very cheap a pair of ex-race Hagon 777cc Mahle 2-ring forged
pistons and liners for my 3rd XS650. Noone told me they were 14.8:1 CR
intended for a methanol burning grasstrack outfit! I had to get them
machined down *and* use 3 (!) copper head gaskets to even get them it to run
on 4-Star. Hot-starting was fun; Not!
The Hagon conversions always seem to be best at producing power higher up
the rev range. Tony Hall (Halco) always went for low end grunt and was the
king of the long-stroke XS650. I saw running once at his old place in
Horndean, a 1442cc (FFS!) 'XS650' engine. A real one-off "just to see how
far you can go" says he.....
    Amazing bloke and sadly missed.

Keep it then, unless you desperately need a winter hack and thus can't
    sell the 550.

  11. I spent a lot of time and money at Halco, restoring my last XS650. He
    knew his shit.

Indeed. It was only recently I discovered it was suicide.

I think I spent *all* of my money at Halco for about 10 years! I know my way
round the inside of an XS650 lump better than my own house! I'm sure I could
do a top end rebuild blindfolded like they train soldiers to do a strip and
    reaasembly of their rifles.
I was pretty stunned when I heard too.

  15. Well, like I said elsewhere, I have resisted the temptation to ad
another SOB to the Chateau's collection, and it's on Ebay.

It has one week. If I get no bids, I keep it. I'm actually half-hoping
    it doesn't sell.

I didn't know that buying something and then sticking it on fleabay
counted as "resisting the temptation". Maybe I should try it sometime.
Not very resistant, are we? :)
