I considered leaving a note in the house telling her that I'd had to
scrape ice off my windscreen at 5am but decided not to bother.

I didn't leave a note saying I'd had to scrape ice off my saddle. We
probably passed each other on the M1.

  5. I've succumbed to temptation and ordered one.

Not because I need it. Just because.

  6. Will the rivnuts work with a standard pop-rivet gun, or is there
    something fundamentally different between them?

There is quite a difference, yes.

The Rivnut gun works by threading a sized insert, eg M6, into
the Rivnut to be located in plate. The insert is like a bolt,
but has a collar on it that screws into the gun. So the Rivnut
is threaded onto the insert which is secured to the gun.

Squeezing the handles together pulls on the insert in the
Rivnut. The only bit that can deform is the collar at the
top of the thread (behind the hosting sheet of metal), so
it bulges outwards and nips up against the host sheet. A
bit like using a rubber version.

What normally happens with these is that Some Numpty(tm) will
over-tighten the bolt in the Rivnut to the point where the
collar slips on the host sheet, so it just ends up spinning.
If you're lucky and can get the bolt out (with malicious
use of mole-grips) then you can tighten up the Rivnut by
using the gun on it again.

How would you imagine the spanner jaw gap (metric or imperial) and across
the flats head sizes (metric or imperial) are measured?

They are brilliant. I discovered the wonder of Rivnuts about 10 years
ago. Perfect for fitting spotlamp brackets to rally cars, discovered
them when I found out that's how Ford used to do it.

Given a new collector is £195 (*plus* VAT and delivery) from Motad, I

Ta. Typical - buy a 10 quid tool, then find I need 30 quids worth of
    bits for it.
