I think the guy has Chicken Little Syndrome, if he gave it a month
things would even out. IMO of course. Here, meaning California, we had a
very big write up in the paper quite some tome ago now about the smoking
ban. Business dropped off for a short while and they boomed as all the
people that didn't go to pubs because of the smoke started going. The
pub owners are quite happy now.
The Witherspoons near The Tower of London has a non-smoking area.
Unfortunately, you have to walk through the smoking area to get to it
and to top it off, it's upstairs. Where does all the smoke go? Upstairs
    and the ventilation sucks.

Bizarre! Shouldn't there be a law against premature, self-inflicted,
    commercial suicide?

I wouldn't be surprised if there was an alterior motive for closing down
    early.

The pub will be converted into luxury flats within 3 months of closing, I'll
    wager.

And there's me thinking "they" wanted to close down pubs because there
were too many of them but couldn't think why.

Has this got something do do with the Binge drinking culture we hear so
    much about?

And I may possibly be moving to Elgin. Top stuff, could make it a nice
    place to live.

    Fucking *ding*.

I was talking to "someone" who owns a pub, who reckoned that their
premises would be worth a lot more if it could be converted to
residential premises - but apparently you're not allowed to do that
unless you can prove that it's no longer viable to run as a licensed
establishment, which basically means you have to find a way to run down
    the trade...

And not before time. Soon I might be able to go out and not come home
    smelling like someones ashtray.

It's hard to have any sympathy for them. They've had 5 years to come up
with a voluntary method of keeping the air clean in their pubs and they
did sweet fanny adams about it, so hell mend them.

  14. Well, I have a gold card for the bingo hall up the road. It is a private
club because you can't just walk in off the street and play but you can
just walk in off the street and become a member. Then there's a club
I've been a member of that you had to be voted in for.

What's your thoughts about people going out on their bikes for a quick
Sunday blast. Shouldn't that be banned as well?

But it's harming people just for somebody else s personal pleasure.

A bit of a fictive argument I know, but the point I'm trying to get
across is that blanket banning something because it could harm others is
a slippery slope. Just about anything you do could have a negative effect
on somebody else. If a pub has a no smoking policy then that's fine by
me. If it allows smoking then go to another pub if you don't want to
    drink in a smokey pub.

Only allowing members of the club in. This has other benefits in that
the licencing is more relaxed. They can set their own hours I think.

Classic example is a uni bar. Private members club where the members
    are the NUS membership.
