and these guys run nuclear power stations....

The SO[1] Renault's heater fan finally gave up the ghost this weekend.

Thought I'd have a go at fixing it.

The 'proper' procedure for getting at the fan is to take the entire dash
out. Sod. That. Googling reveals a shortcut to get at the relevant
    connector.

    I got it out: http://www.flickr.com/photos/58125090@N00/4162292449/

What's so dang hard about using the right sort of connector for the
right amount of current. Don't these plankers ever learn?

[1]actually still the newest car I've got, 53 plate.

You buy a French car then have the audacity to come here and complain?

    Good point, well made.

I have to vent my stupidity somewhere.

  4. That's not so uncommon, actually.
That's well cooked, is that. :)

Chances are that they have done exactly that. A common cause of
failure of the connectors is people not changing the pollen filters,
they get bunged up, the fan motor is then struggling to move any air,
and drawing more current that then burns out the connectors...

50p on filters would have saved you all that work and worry...
    ....and the ship was lost

I doubt that's the case very much. The replacement (modified) connector
and resistor pack have doubled up on the main power connectors.

Ahh, so *everyone* failed to change the filters, then? ;)

What have Renault got to do with nuclear power stations?

If you wanted to rate technical ability to run a power station against
ability to build an up to date means of transport then I wouldn't look
any further than our cousins across the water and HD.

    Hi guys.

HA! At least we haven't any Lucas electrics...well excepting the
occasional vintage vehicle. 8^) To be fair their (french) reactors
seem safe and reliable compared to others...well they seem safe from a
    safe distance. 8^)

    <thinks>

The Frogs are very good at running Nukes whereas the Yanks can't manage
either worth a ****. Or was that your point.

Err, usually an unloaded fan will rev up and if it's a parallel-wound
motor (or permanent magnet type) will draw less current, not more.
Think of what a vacuum cleaner does when you plug the hose, or how a
Concept II rowing machine load control works.

Well, I was trying to get my point over by simply mentioning HD
motorcycles but if you want me to be more specific then I'll cite 3
    Mile Island as further evidence.

Obviously we had Windscale and NVT but at least we saw the error of
our ways and got rid of the pair of them.

NVT imploded and I suspect the debris from Windscale will have gone
into drums encased in concrete before they were chucked over the side
of a ship in the middle of the night.

I think you're confusing genetic flaws with the results of nuclear
    contamination.

One and the same thing. Innit.

Considering how few of them we have and an utter failure to standardise the
UK nuke power industry has done a good job.

Take a good modular design. Small regional reactors. Standardise and build
100 of them and you would have a real success story IMHO. Just need a few
large Pu burning designs and a FOAD salt dome mine for the rest of the bits
    to square the circle.

It's so obvious and so much needed to just know it isn't going to happen.
