  2. From the Animated Engines web site: " The four stroke engine was first
demonstrated by Nikolaus Otto in 1876, hence it is also known as the
    Otto cycle. "

To the mythical Ngauladrfithagirth tribe in the highlands of PNG, the
word 'otto' means 'three and a half and a tiny bit extra'.

Auto is probably a distinction from manual, ie pedal power. If you want
to instantly associate any use of the words manual or automatic directly
with the type of gearbox, that's your prerogative.

  6. Maybe Jordan, the word automatic, didn't relate to anything to do with
motors or gearboxes as some of these here seem to think
You were being silly and I threw in another one changing Otto to Auto
Maybe from Otto mobile vehicle, to Auto mobile vehicle
You know the way that some of these New South Wailians speak
then all of a sudden we have gearboxes thrown into the fray.
Automatic probably wasn't brought into the motor industry till years later

Otto was given that name because he was born with 8 arms. In order
not to be octracised at school, they cut off the 6 spare arms just
    after birth.
