Another bingle for my collection

About an hour ago, on the way to work. So far as I can tell I either
took too long for a lane-change head check or chose precisely the
wrong moment to make it, because when I looked back ahead the queue of
    traffic had abruptly stopped.

I *almost* made it, too. I swerved hard to the left of the car in
front but clipped the guy's left taillight and hit his back bumper
with my right fork leg, which snapped off the AVDS doohickey:

    http://www.khi.co.jp/mcycle/museum/gpz900r/history/images/p_avds.gif

That pretty much sealed the deal for a relatively low-speed lowside, I
took a tumble down the road and just for once didn't end up with 250kg
of motorbike lying on my leg.

So the damage amounts to a broken left taillight and a plastic bumper
with a gouge out of it on the car (a Peugeot hatchback). My bike has
a broken front indicator, a chunk snapped off the top of the fairing
screen, and the anti-dive unit cracked off the right fork leg. The
forks are slightly twisted in the triple clamps, hopefully the
    stanchion tubes aren't bent.

Oh, and my long-suffering left ribs have taken another bruising, but
they're not hurting enough to indicate cracks or breaks this time.

Oh, with Bingle constantly in the news this week I thought you were
    talking about Lara.
    That looks expensive.
    Sounds like a reasonable outcome.

Funny, she's got her tits out all over the net in high-def professional
photos and a grainy shot of her in the shower is the biggest thing since
    WWII...

Nah, they've been talking about a trainwreck.

BT, I do hope you're not practising to win the hardluck award at the
    unaugural.

I had my first o-shit moment yesterday. It'd be nice if all car
drivers reliably did headchecks before pulling out to overtake. No
use sticking the indicator on and finally doing the headcheck when
you're already halfway into the opposite lane and the rider beside you
is making a frantic effort to stay out from the ditch.

No thanks Johno, I'm on the Strong Drugs. It's beginning to feel like
a cracked rib, rather than just a bruised one. (My left side ribs are
a bit weak, having been broken twice before).

From the bike's perspective it was a relatively gentle lowside. It
broke the knob off the clutch lever, but barely scratched the left
    engine case/footpeg/muffler.

Those things hurt! Suggest you mix Strong Drugs with He Man drinks -
    the browner the better.

  14. Get well soon.

I did that once...nearly missed it, minor injuries, damaged 1 tailight
on a Patrol ute - did about $3000 worth to the bike.

Sounds like you came out OK but Peugeot parts can be pricey, hope the
    insurance is paid up.

    Good luck.

Bad luck, Mate. It could have been worse though -- you could've hit
a Rolls Royce (tail light sections cost $2000 each). How fast wast
    the traffic moving?

I would guess by his description of the event that the traffic had abruptly
    stopped

Dubya is right: "was" could mean any time, so I haven't been specific
    enough.

BT: it's a good job you weren't hurt.

I did exactly the same thing myself this evening, except when I swerved I
missed the car in front by millimetres. Glad to hear you're (relatively)
undamaged - ribs are supposed to heal well if you don't alter the
positions of the broken bits by doing something silly, like e.g.
    breathing.

What I did wrong was starting to accelerate to make the lane change as I
was doing the head check. If I'd just pootled into the adjacent lane like
some of the car drivers further up, I wouldn't have got so close to the
    suddenly stopping car in front.

May be it's a Canberra thing?
