What does the FOAK think it'll fetch?

How long is a piece of string?

Funny ones to value - a half decent MOTd example can be had for not much
more than a grand. Immaculate ones appear to be less sought after than a
    Midget.

I'll pitch in that it *might* make £4k, as it does appear to be
    exceptional.

It's been valued at 12 grand, I doubt they'll take 4 for it.

Gosh, I'm surprised that makes you twitch. My memory of spitfires is of
unreliable rusty old lumps and that's when they were (I think) still a
current model. Anyone I knew that had a spitfire really wanted an MG
    but couldn't afford it.

After two or three "reserve not met" auctions they mught start to change
    their minds

I doubt if it'll sell then. There are plenty of Spitfires out there in
all sorts of condition and you can do a lot of work for the extra £8k
before you reach the claimed value.

I always suspect sellers put items like this on ebay as some kind of a
"look what I've got" stunt with a massive reserve and no real cares
about if it sells or not.

    For a Spitfire?

That's taking the piss. You could buy a freshly restored MGB for that.

It's a very period colour for the car, though. I like it. (Katie's mum
had a Marina in that colour)

Well, it 'sold' at a BIN of £5.5k previously, but, strangely, the buyer
    didn't go through with it.

The highest I can see a Spitfire selling for recently - an absolutely
    mint yellow-ish one - was £3100.

    Or, alternatively, there was this:

    QQcategoryZ29760QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Which is a very tidy looking one at £1250. I'd have twitched at that If
    I'd seen it in time.

It does look nice but I'll check with the seller if it's a trailer queen.
Other than that, convertibles rock. Buy it :)

    You missed out total idiots.

I had one for about 3 months. Long enough to change the engine for a
more desirable unit and then have someone set fire to it outside my
home after I'd pissed him off a bit too much.

    It's worth 4 1/2 but I reckon it'll go for a shade under 10k

    It's a Spitfire, it's worth 3 parts of **** all cos they're shit, but
it'll probably sell for about £5,500

  19. *Ding* my old Spitfire 1500 was on its 13th owner - me :( When I bought
it I noticed that the engine number was not from a Spitfire so it was on at
least its second engine, which within a matter of weeks, suffered from a
terminal condition known as "two piece crankshaft".
*Ding* *ding* - the front wasn't bad, but the rear transverse leaf spring
    was an abomination.

Having said that, I'd happily exchange one of my current cars for a good
Spitfire - the Spit highly impractical with terrible reliability *but* it
was fun to drive unlike today's uninvolving motors.

I think it was an accumulation of things. I claimed off the insurance
so didn't really give a **** because it was a pile of poo anyway.
They were pretty crap though unless you got a really good one. Holes
in the footwells were common on older models and I had constant
fuelling prblems with mine. The good thing was that 25 years ago you
had a choice of engines readily available and they took a morning to
change if you didn't have a clue. Less if you did.

I'd buy one now if it was very cheap and the floor was ok. You can
    still get panels cheaply enough.
