Why is it that a 2002 Audi A3 1.6 SE costs nearly 100 quid more to
insure than a same age/value Audi A4 2.0 SE Sport, and an A4 2.0 Avant
with same SE spec costs about 120 quid more than the saloon?

    Baffling

Quite possibly. From memory the A3 shares its door locks with quite a
lot of the rest of the VAG range (no idea on the A4 but if its like the
Passat its different). These locks also got shared by Seat and used on
the Leon and are a well known easy entry point as demonstrated by
somebody easily getting into my Leon a few years ago.

    I de-locked my Leon as a result.

It appears this may be the reason

Just returned from Leicester where I was looking at three A4s 2.0
SEs[1]. I reckon every bright gold A3 3 door is now residing in
Leicester, and Leicester's Asian population has the monopoly on
lowering kits and 20" wheel conversions for them. By christ, they
really do know how to **** a decent car up.

[1] Only one of which was worth a second thought, just as well it's the
colour I prefer (met mid blue)

    I really wouldn't bother.

1.8Ts are more powerful (150bhp vs 128bhp, which is going to feel very
asthmatic in a lardy car like the A4), faster and just as economical.
They're reliable, too - my 1.8T Passat had done 180k miles when I sold
    it.

150? The same unit in the Leon is rated at 179.

They came in 3 power outputs.

    150, 163 and 179.

Not sure what years got which output, or how to tell which one you have.

The 1.8T came with anything from 150bhp - 225bhp depending on
    application.

    I don't need a powerful car and I don't need a turbocharged car. I need
relative simplicity and low enough bills, but I also want a bit of
comfort and decent build quality; that's why I'm looking at 2.0 A4s.

What every **** and his dog seems to forget is that I have zero, O%,
no, absolutely **** all NCD, so insuring a 1.8T is like burning a stack
of 20s, because it won't give me anything more than I need from a 2.0.
The insurance on a 2.0 is bad enough.

Cars are for need, not for pleasure - I have a bike for pleasure and a
1.8T A4 is not going to float my boat power-wise at all, so why bother
buying one when the bills are that little bit higher. The only thing I
*want* from my next car is comfort.

That'll be chipped then. 210 and (later) 225 were standard, same as the
    Cupras of the time.

The two litre lump in the 05- Cupra puts out 240. Same or similar motor
    in the equivalent GTI.

I toyed with one but figured it wasn't worth the extra money vs a Cupra.

I've lost your insurance query on the saloon v hatchback question. The
answer, I think, apart from the nickability/dickability history that
InsCos put so much faith in, is repair costs - something else close to
    their hearts.

If you had a rear-ender in a saloon, the bumper and rear panel might
need replacing, possibly the bootlid. Same impact in a hatch and you'd
need a new hatch - and I bet they're a fucksight more expensive than a
    tin bootlid.

I'm using Xananews, have been for a few years - I still haven't found a
way to retrieve old threads easily.
Yeah, I can see that. It turns out estate models are the same as
hatches insurance wise. I'll be buying somethin wivva boot then, cos
even coupes are at least 150 quid more expensive than their saloon
    counterparts are to insure.

I could have thrashed around a bit, unticked "Hide read messages" and
then waded through the bits of thread that had disappeared, but, TBH, I
couldn't be arsed. I'd intended to reply earlier on, but other stuff
got in the way and then I forgot.
The old boy that bought my booted 406 loves it so much, he keeps buying
me beer. Hatches and estates are so fucking handy, but you really need
something Micra-like to build up some NCD first.
