Received this from another source this evening.
Thought I'd post it here just in case it saves someone a few quid.
Not absolutely certain of the authenticity of the content as yet.

*Re: M42 Junctions 3 to 7b Speed Cameras go live TOMORROW

As of tomorrow I have discovered that a new digital automated
tracking system between junctions 3 & 7b on the M42 is scheduled
    to go live.

There are 276 Digital Cameras which have been set to 2MPH
    tolerance.

You will not see any flash and the fine is £60 plus 3 points
(which could add to over £250 / year to your insurance).

This information comes to me on good authority but I must stress
    that it is un-official.

I hope this email saves you if you have to travel on the M42.

Talking of speed cameras, there *loads* going up round London atm.

What *are* those tiny cameras on long poles I've been seeing springing
    up all over?

Not speed cameras, additional CCTV. Can't even pick yer nose without some
    bugger seeing.

There are however several brand new cameras on the gantries in the
variable speed limit section. I suspect it'll work just like the M25.

I've seen the CCTV, but these are painted yellow and have datum lines :(

There have been so many I cannot quite recall exactly where they all
    are.

Most of the ones I've seen are still wrapped in clear polythene but it
    doesn't look good.

Maybe they're CCTV with added speed detection ability?

BTW, I pick my nose in my cab and I hate not being able to do it to my
full satisfaction because of what someone going the other way might
    think!

    Yep, but today is not!
This was sent to me yesterday.
Could be a hoax though, but knowing our Gubmit as it is, it's probably very
    true!

  10. If they are all in West London then they may be for the Western
extension of the Congestion Charge Zone.

There's one facing east on the Harrow road just by the Marylebone
flyover that I know for sure.
I will. I've seen a few in the last day or three.
Plausable though there's one on Rosalyn Hill, NW3 facing *uphill*!
True, I do get a degree of amusement when I see someone else picking
    theirs.

I haven't ventured further west than Old Street for about two years[1]
and the ones I've seen don't look like CC cameras, they look more like
miniature versions of the Limehouse Link cameras.

[1] I went to E14 about 3 weeks ago but that was straight down
    Commercial St and back.

I got it and it said the go live date was April 1st which made me a
    tad suspicious.

I was also under the impression they were already live, and I'd be
surprised if the tolerance was anything other than normal APCO
    guidelines.

    It does.

And I use it everyday, and it really has made a difference. The
traffic now always flows, ok slowly at times, but I haven't been stuck
    since they put them up.

They are a new style digital speed camera. No longer made by GATSO,
but by some Aussie firm. They have mega high quality lenses, and do
not need to use flash during the daytime. If you do not see a flash,
it does not mean you have got away with it. They do not use film, but
send the images directly to the computers at the prosecutions unit
where an NIP will be auto generated. As they do not have to house a
film cassette, they are much, much smaller than the GATSO's. The
cameras can be fixed on poles up to 5m high. There have been quite a
few of them installed in NW London of late. (Harrow Rd being one of
    them).

Harrow Road was the first one I noticed; just by the shell garage
    heading east.

Cheers for the tip. I suppose they're live all the time, too? Not like
Gatsos that may or may not contain film.

That's the one. The A5 has a few now as well.
Yup, 24/7 livelinked to the computers that deal with the DVLA
checks/NIP generation. Unfortunately this means that Trumpton and the
Ambulances are going to have to deal with a lot more NIP's now. Before
this whole automated system, the chaps working in the speed
enforcement offices would just generally bin any activations by these
folks. They'll be ok, just a whole lot more form filling that they
    could do without.

These'll be the same kind as the ones they've had round Bristol for a
