Well, the house next door has a similarly swanky back yard and changed
hands not so long ago for £1.1m [1], so I guess it depends how you
    define "nice".

[1] This is why I stick to renting

I don't know which is worse. Beckton, Arnos Grove or the confusing top
posting just under the attribution line.

An understandable conclusion from someone who's never experienced
    Beckton.

    .... and this morning?

Light crunchy snow for the first 25yds, then clear, *dry*, roads all
    the way into work.

One of my reporters left early and took the train to Epsom where he Ma
met her in the car. Then they got stuck. They got towed out by some
large 4x4 crewed by two likely lads who, grinning, charged them a
tenner. They were charging all and sundry a tenner a pop to be towed
out of snowdrifts or whatever. Seems they hit on this cunning wheeze
last winter and came down from Wimbledon the moment they heard Surrey
was snowed in. Next to our bod was some bloke who'd been waiting for
hours for the AA. he cheerfully handed over his tenner and was on his
way. Wonder how much they made?

(There's a little insurance issue here, but hang that, say I. This is
the sort of enterprise I applaud)

"Clearly this is far from a scientific test, but we hope it helps to
    make a point."

They also reiterated that winter tyres are better in cold weather
    anyway, even withoiut snow.

    So semi-serious, I think.

Oh, but they repeated the same myth mentioned elsewhere in this thread
    - "In europe it's actually a legal requirement to have them fitted
    during winter months". It's not.

Oh no. I have had the Beckton experience. :( I used to live in North
Woolwich Just up from Silvertown at the end of King George dock. It was
handy for Canary Wharf. The Hotel California was my local[1]. I had to
change bus in Beckton occasionally when I had missed the last DSR. This
was never a sober bus ride fortunately or I might have been worried.

[1]That was an interesting pub if ever there was one.

It is Sweden. I would presume it is also law in some others.

In 1993 I took my hire car onto Daytona Beach, having been told not to
by the hire company, and got stuck. With the tide coming in.

A Merc attempted to come to my rescue, and that got stuck too.
Eventually a ranger came along and organised a guy with a truck to come
and pull both cars out. He got me out first and I drove back to the
exit and stopped. He then got the Merc out, which prompty drove off
the beach and out past me.

I flagged the tow truck driver down, and gave him $20. To say he was
pleasantly surprised was an understatement, as he was used to the Yanks
just driving off without a word of thanks, as proven by the Merc driver.

  17. Bad habits starting to form. The place I'm posting to a lot at the
moment seems to thrive on top posting much to my dismay. I just fit in.
    Anyway all fixed now.

Of course the red wine doesn't help!
