Anyone else silly enough to ride a bike into work today?

    Having reading problems today?

"As an alternative to winter tyres, snow chains may be used..."
Proves nothing. The implication was that they were mandatory for most
    Euro countries, which is bollocks.

There are rules about winter tyres, chains and studded tyres, for
sure, but I wasn't claiming otherwise.

Not at all. I read "Winter tyres are mandatory in Austria"
"...on at least two driving wheels, however, these may only be used in
case the road is covered by a complete or scarcely broken snow cover or
    sheet of ice."
No, but if you're going to go all Blaney-esque with your replies, it's
helpful to eventually get to the bottom of it.

Did you not read the rest of the sentence then? The bit that says
....in winter conditions such as snow, slush or ice..."

So all it's saying is that you can't drive in snow unless you have
them gittedm or have snow chains. Not the same as "In europe it's
actually a legal requirement to have them fitted during winter
    months".

    It's very badly written.

    It says

    It says...

"The law states that passenger cars with a permissible maximum weight of
up to 3.5 tonnes may be operated only between 1 November and 15 April in
winter conditions such as snow, slush or ice if winter tyres have been
    installed on all wheels."

....which comes across as meaning if a car has winter tyres on all four
wheels, it can only be used between 1/11 and 15/4 in the appropriate
conditions. That is, limiting when winter tyres can be used, rather than
limiting when non-winter tyres can be used.

    Whereas if it said...

"The law states that passenger cars with a permissible maximum weight of
up to 3.5 tonnes may be operated between 1 November and 15 April in
winter conditions such as snow, slush or ice only if winter tyres have
    been installed on all wheels."

....that'd match your interpretation. It's probably what they mean, but
it's a shitty bit of writing.

Be fair, the Merc driver had already done his good Samaritan bit in trying
to help you out in the first place. Seems a bit mealy-mouthed of you to
begrudge him a freebie, so to speak, on you.

Do I look like someone who cares? they didn't have to pull over ON the
fucking motorways and if they are stuck that's because they didn't stay at
    home or take 'chains.
Plod/CamClegg need to wake the **** up. When the snow gets like this roads
need to be closed to all unprepared vehicles.

Unprepared vehicles you say? Like that outfit you took to the Elefant

  11. 1992-ish, I abandoned my Tranny short of Luton and hiked home some four
miles one night, but two lads with an old Landie were doing a roaring
trade at a fiver a time for a tow up the hill. Seriously, there must
have been fifty or more cars stuck there and all because some timid ****
wouldn't go at more than 20mph up it - she/he/it got stuck and everyone
else couldn't get going to get past s/h/it.

Ditto - until some **** from some agency comes along and tells them they
    can't do that.

I had two Evo Vs nearly two years ago, a white one with snow tyres, and
a silver one without. The silver one was a fucking liability on the
snow covered autobahn, whereas my mate Alex, who was driving the white
one for me, said with proper tyres it just drove as normal. In the end
we swopped the rear wheels off the white car onto the front of my
silver one so I had a chance of getting up some of the inclines without
    careering into the barriers
