Imperial being the only example I can think of off the top of my head.

So? I've got a crappy (read: heavy) IBM laptop. I'll be buggered if I
buy my own for use at work.
Well, if it was his own personal one, then tough shit. He should be
able to claim it on household insurance anyway. If he's got it.

Oh, that's new (for me, at any rate). So if you want to be in the NUS,
but the USU doesn't, does this mean that you're stuffed or can you join
    separately?
    Very true.
Ah, so it's changed since I was a student. But by not being in the NUS,
do the fees that are normally paid to the NUS get transferred to the
    student?

  4. How very odd that you have to opt out rather than opt in.

I'm probably out of date but I thought legislation was based on opting
in to union membership rather than opting out.

I claimed off Chevron when I had my bags turned over at Atyrau airport
and a camera, a case of CD's and a few other sundry items nicked. My
direct employer (I was sub-contacted to Chevron at the time) had told
me to **** off so I told Chevron I wouldn't go back unless someone
paid. They didn't hesitate for a minute, just told me to buy new and
give them the receipts and they'd pay me within 7 days.

I always make it clear to any employer that I expect tools to be
replaced if stolen and if my van was broken into and my tools swiped
I'd walk if they didn't replace everything taken. I'd also look on it
as a mission to stiff said company as much as possible once I'd found
new employment. They're very stupid if they don't realise this would
cost them several £k in lost revenue.

  6. This is *exactly* how I see it. And my tools are cameras and a laptop.

  7. What part of "company" laptop is difficult to comprehend? Even for a
    faux Froggie? ;-)

I would within reason, and I'd adapt what I took, to be reasonable. For
    example I know that there's something like a £500-600ish [1] per item
cap on our travel insurance, and even then they use all the "was it on
your person / locked in the safe" get outs, just like all the other
insurers do. That's why I'd never take my own computer or anything more
exotic than a compact digicam / ipod when I'm working away.

I'd insist I was given suitable tools to do the job, then do it and get
back to the comforts of home... It's work, not a holiday, after all.
    I'm sticking with boo-hoo-hoo, I'm afraid.

[1] can't rememebr the exact number

Then take your own kit but make sure you tell someone else what you're
taking and why you're taking it so they understand why the company
    stuff has been left behind.

I;m with Ace. If it is lost, its their issue. When mine was knicked out of
the car last year the company asked me to claim on the car insurnace, I
    told them were to go.

It is not your property, they can't make you responsible (hell who could
:) ). If they don't want it lost, don't take it.

Leave yours at home, take theirs. They will not thank you for not using
    theirs.

Nope, all my clothes were stolen from my car while on business, not
companies problem. You are living in a dream world on this one Neil.

I don't get to work from home. I just get days when I know someone
many miles away has to make a decision for my job to progress (or even
start) so I might as well loaf in a hotel room until later in the
morning. I also get to head for the hotel bar mid afternoon knowing
that they might phone me later in the afternoon and need my presence
for about 30 minutes for the work to start at some point this decade.

If my clothes are nicked from my bag whilst on site I'll make sure the
site operator compensates me or they finish the work themselves. If my
clothes are nicked from a hotel car park it's my problem. If my
clothes are nicked from a hotel room it's the hotels problem.

If my tools are nicked from anywhere apart from in front of my house
it's my employers problem and if they want to keep me they'll replace
them. I don't have any doubts that they'd be replaced.

Read the T&C's in the hotels. I think that they'll disagree.

I think you'll find that the hotels T&C go out of the window if you've
given them the room key whenever you leave the hotel.

They always (as far as I've seen) offer compensation up to a set
maximum for items stolen from a room and if the crim is proven to be
an employee using their access to keys to pinch stuff they pay in
full. I can only claim to know of one case where this happened but the
hotel replaced the lot, although that was about 12 months after an
    interim payment.

  20. Wasn't the poxy Adelphi, then. I've had the misfortune to stay there a few
times. Last time, for a conference, one of me colleagues had his laptop
nicked. Plod refused to show up as they said it was the staff. It is always
the staff there, they reckon - and this particular theft was from their so
called secure storage! I think he sued, dunno what the outcome was.
