A toy bike. Mucks Yam FZR250.

I reckon that on really twisty roads I can have a right laugh with it
as long as I don't have to be able to go much over 100mph to keep up
with bigger bikes. I've given it a bit of a clean and a good dose of
looking at and it seems pretty sound. The engine's a bit rattly at
tick over when it's cold but on something that revs to nearly 20k rpm
who gives a **** about tick over?

I think it's the same chassis etc as the FZR400 and bits for those
are easy to pick up so if it needs anything doing it shouldn't be an
issue. I'm pleased with it and he was pleased to get more funding for
his degree course (and a new crash helmet) so that's ok.

  2. I'm also afraid that the garage vacuum has been over-filled. I've also
just won a second CD250 (bid on Ebay before I left, and won it) and I've
just been offered a very clean monolever BMW R80 (unfaired), one owner,
    50k, new MoT, for £750.

I intend to cannibalise the two CD250s to make one superb one and either
one not so good one which can go back on Ebay or a pile of parts, which
    can ditto.

The BMW can go on Ebay as well. Should make a few quid on that.

    Sucked too hard, did it?
Hmm. Lack of fairing rules it out, otherwise I may have been
interested. But it'll probably end up in bits in double-quick time
    anyway, like the K75...
Parts would probably fetch more, wouldn't they?

Oh, and I'll probably try to hook up the "goodish" XL250 engine
tomorrow as it's found its way into the good frame today. Unfortunately
it also appears to have left a couple of marks on the "powder coating"
that seems to look more like paint every day. Arse...

If you decide to break the R80...

    Mmm, 10/32 bevel box...

I rode it to work :).

Actually I noticed when I got to work that the water temperature
warning light had come one and the fan was seized. They all do that,
sir. I know, but both TOG and myself forgot to check.

So this weekend I have mostly been taking apart the K and fitting a new
used fan from Motorworks. All I need to find now is an appropriate
socket for the plugs and I can complete the service. Not to mention
that I got a reminder this morning as to why I love fitting air filters
    to Ks that much...

What is this "toolkit" thing you're speaking of?

I hope that the one from the GS fits but I haven't checked yet. Got to
go for a ride to warm up the oil enough to drain it properly and it's
    pissing down again...
Well, the one in there clearly hadn't been changed in a long time. From
the way it looked, someone who probably was a tad cheap had actually
reversed the filter at one point as it was equally dirty on both sides.

Actually sliding it out and in wasn't too bad as I had tank, plastics
    and radiator off.

BTW, do you happen to remember how much gearbox oil these take? I need
    to change that as well...

    0.8 to 0.85L of SAE80 or 90. I was using a Mobil 75-90 synthetic in
    mine, probably anal and unecessary.
Remember the rear shock C spanner is the gearbox dipstick

.... which of course is also missing. Arse. I've to some decent
semi-synth here but need the dipstick first.

  11. Oddly, Jamie's DT50 deosn't have a dipstick for the gearbox oil, nor a
sight glass, nor even a level plug.

The Haynes BOL tells you to buy Yamaha Special Tool XXX, and after
removing the filler plug, insert it, resting on the clutch top, and take
    the reading.

It also, thankfully, shows you how to make your own dipstick, giving all
the measurements for the upper and lower limits.

I took the measurements, cut suitably measured notches into the side of
    a pencil, and used that...

I hope it's a proper pencil, & not one of those new-fangled lead
replacement jobbies - don't wanna damage those crank seals.

  13. Drain it a refill with the correct quantity. See where the level is on a
piece of wire. That's your dipstick.

That would assume that the current level of oil in the gearbox would be
correct and I can't be sure that it is...

  16. Ahem. Drain and refill with the recommended quantity for "oil change".
Good manuals give total oil capacity and volume at change time (because
    some always stays put).

I guess another call to Motorworks on Monday is in order as I need a
    plug spanner as well.
