Note to self: next time I'm in Sydney, take along a set of some type of
hefty pliers, so I can clip those toenail-things Littler's bike came
    with from the factory.

    IK,
ZX9 frame getting dropped off at powdercoater-bloke's tomorrow morning.
Other ZX9 frame continues to await arrival of functioning engine.

I hope you've put it on a strict diet then :)

With a full tank of fuel, a 1998-1999 ZX9 weighs 211kg or thereabouts.
A 1998-1999 GSX-R750, similarly weighed down, checks in at 213kg... the
same, incidentally, as the 2004 FireBlade.

The heaviest Gixxer ever... they had to put *IT* on a diet to get back
to the original concept. No wonder the 99 R1 sold like hotcakes.
<raised eyebrow> a fully wet 2004 'blade is the same weight as a fully
    wet '99 ZX9 ?? ! I find that very difficult to believe.

So you're trying to say that every manufacturer *other* than Honda
managed to squeeze mucho weight out of the litre bike, and Honda
    couldn't even match a 5 year old Kwaka ?

Um, no. That would be the first of the water-cooled models, at 208kg
dry, in 1992. They claimed 179kg dry for the SRAD because that's what
they claimed for the original F-model GSX-R750 in 1985.
No, the R1 sold like hotcakes because it had a pointy nose and would
wheelie off the power in second. Despite weighing a whopping 5kg more,
the SRAD GSX-R750 would out-handle an early R1 into a ditch.
Well, the GSX-R and the R1 are a couple of kg over 200kg wet, the first
ZX-10R was the lightest, at 195kg wet. The Blade was the heaviest... and
it still won the Aus Championship both years that model ran.

How sporty a bike feels has nothing to do with how much it weighs (all
the current litre bikes, bar the Honda, weigh more than the models which
preceded them); it's the weight distribution, the wheelbase, the rake
and the suspension tune. A 255kg ZX-12R is a sportier bike to ride than
    a 197kg CBR600F4.

I'm going to have to concede on this one - it's not my recollection (I
could have sworn the porky one was later than that), but you're more
likely to know and I can't be arsed googling :)
<chuckle> Cynic. While the latter definitely helped sales I think
you're underestimating the enjoyability of riding the R1 (ignoring it's
propensity for smacking you in the face with the tank), like your
description of the ZX10 some months again. You bloody well KNEW you
    were on a sports bike.
Errmm yeah if you say so, I don't think it was the generally accepted
    view at the time though.
So you're sticking with a 99 ZX9 and an 04 CBR thou are the same weight
? That's a pretty poor effort on Honda's part if true. Given how much
weight all the manufacturers have shaved off their bikes this decade.
You have an interesting definition of sporty then.

Really? R1's and GSX-R's were being handled, and out-handled, into ditches all the time. ;-)

Yep; I can't think of any other bikes that would've been "ditched" as often
in the last 10 or 15 years!

Cosmetics? Sounds like a girlie bike. My bike doesn't have cosmetics, it has
    appendages.

  12. You don't still remember him waxing lyrical about the R1 back in the day
as well? His may have left him a poorer and less physically able man,
but I seriously doubt he's in any way unaware of how much fun there was
    to be had riding them...

    That's a pretty healthy total.
