trsut the french to do things so differently

odd that there seems to be so many modifiers in franch , yet they dont seem
to be able to get their shit to together when its comes to a national brand
, with the excpetion of voxan perhaps ???

If they built one, I wouldn't want one. Buell's are close enough anyway.

I love Hoglys in general, except for the V-Rod.

If you want a Harley, you buy a Harley.

If you want a sports bike, you buy a sports bike.

I liked the Harley because I could jump on it and ride to the other end
of the country and back with nothing more than an oil change and (maybe)
a set of tyres. It was cheap to run and had great fuel economy.

I like the Triumph because it makes me do bad things.

Neither bike could match the others' capabilities.

Which is why one motorcycle is never enough.

Some of it has to be price. What's the demographic buying equivalently
    priced machines?

A 30yo gets to choose to pay $25k for a Harley, or $15k for a metric
cruiser if they want a cruiser, or a Monster type if they don't want a
full on sportbike but want something they can more or less cruise on.
hah! Look at all that unused room in your garage!

YOu could fit heaps more bikes in there.

    - who might manage to fit 5, but it would be a very tight squeeze.

Umm there's plenty of late 20's to late 30's paying 30K + for MV
Agusta's and 999R's etc. Granted I don't think many 35K bikes are being
    sold to 18yr olds but I don't think it's a price issue - HD's are priced
where they are because they can, not because that's what they cost to
make. In the US they have had waiting lists at times, the baby boomers
had the money to pay a premium price for a name. Younger punters don't
value the name that much (they didn't grow up with the whole "easy
rider" etc mythos) and hence don't put as big a premium on it.

From a technology perspective, I'm not about to pay a premium for a
technologically inferior product when I don't value the name. I'd rather
buy a metric "performance" cruiser (ie the "mean streak" (wanky name)
etc and get a cruiser with real brakes, and capable of overtaking
something without having to heavily modify it.
Errm, haven't priced 'em lately but I think you need to add 5K to both
those (unless you're talking about the learner legal cruisers)
But I think you're missing the fact that most 30 yr old's generally
don't buy cruisers - they about 4 times as likely to buy a Monster or
etc, the market niche itself is shrinking in that demographic. A HD
performance cruiser (ie VRod) competes broadly against a Monster, a
    Softail doesn't.
Yeah, I could squeeze another two in there but I said "justify" not
    house :)

    Compared to those who aren't?

I think price means that fewer buy the bike they might otherwise,
although I agree that younger riders don't want cruisers in the same
    number others do.
YOu have it backwards. You don't justify buying them, you justify not
    buying them!

Well if that was the case I'd never buy anything and we all know that
ain't the way it's currently working.

    JL
(really wants an 05 R1 in maroon but really can't justify spending
    another 20K)
