Got the swingarm back in today. Boy was that fun: I had to knock up a
drift to press the UJ into its bearing. I decided against bearing lock
fluid because it's bleeding tight as it is and I stick to the
principle that some poor sod might have to dismantle it one day, and
that poor sod could well be me.

So: shiny new UJ & gaiter fitted. Swingarm is now a lovely Hammerite
    silver-grey.

    Wheel & brake caliper on and... the brake pedal has no resistance;
    nil; nada.

So I dug out the Mityvac, which sucked a little fluid but mostly air
from the nipple itself. I dribbled a bit of oil onto the nipple
threads, which reduced the air intake, but apart from that, no joy.

Then I started unbolting stuff, with the inevitable dribbles of brake
    fluid every-bleeding-where.

It seems that the master cylinder is weeping slightly and the piston
isn't *quite* returning all the way, so the feed hole from the
reservoir stays blocked. I did manage to shove it back a bit using a
thin allen key, which opened the hole, but as soon as I pumped the
piston it simply returned to the not-quite-far-enough position. In
fact, I had noticed over the last few weeks that the pedal was
travelling a fraction further than it should, so now I know why.

There's no obvious way of opening this cylinder up and cleaning it
out, so it looks like I'll need a replacement. Arse.

Plumbers PTFE tape is good for the bleed nipple threads as it stops air
getting passed and can prevent future seizing.

Whip the cylinder off, remove the actuating rod and have a look up the hole.
There should be a circlip in there. Remove and the piston/seal assy will be
able to be removed. (if of course the Quota has the same Brembo rear cyl as
the rest of the big twin Guzzi tribe).

It is a Brembo but very different. However, it could well still have a
    circlip, I'll check tomorrow. Ta.
