Arrrrrrrrh, Postie Bike...

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by PaulpULVITZKA, Sep 12, 2010.

  1. Yeah, so reliable:

The bike is a 1997 model with over 30,000km on it. Both the front and
rear brake hubs need replacing (which is big money by itself), without
a new engine. I've spent over $3000 in repairs on it in the past 18
months. It's like polishing a turd basically. No matter how much money
I spend on it, it's always going to be a dud. The reason I posted on
here is because it saves me taking it out to a mechanic to get it
checked out and organizing transport to and from the store in the
event that it can't be fixed cheaply.

If anybody could give some input to this situation it would be greatly
    appreciated.

I was riding home yesterday through the city and changed from 3rd to
4th gear and heard a big crunching sound. Almost like a bang. First it
just turned into a rattle, then a few kilometers down the road I had
to stop because every rotation of the wheel was extremely loud. Ended
up having to push it home and now it won't go anywhere at all.

I have taken off the cover to the front sprocket, and there is nothing
out of the ordinary going on there. It seems to me like it has
something to do with the transmission (and in that case i'm not
spending any more money on it), but i'm no motor mechanic.

Look forward to hearing your replies.

    Matt.

hahahahaahahahonda, what a pile a shit, like a fireshitbox and every
other pile of shit from the wing company

Straight to Sims Scrap Metal Matt, should be next door to the
    factory....LOL

  2. The only reason you posted this here was to save money
You can have everyone here telling you that it is fucked and buy a new bike
Whereeas, if you took it to a mechanic, he will charge you for that
    privilege

It's probably fucked, if you'll forgive the technical terminology.

What did you expect from a Honda?

If you happen to be within cooee of Syndey, I'll take it off your hands
for $10 (a bloody sight better than the traditional $3.50 and a kick in
the nuts!). I'll even collect it from you.

    regards,

First off, many people who ride them for a job will probably tell you that
well maintained Posties have an economical service life of around
40,000Kms and badly maintained ones, about 30K.

Mine's nudging 30; 20 with Australia Post and the rest delivering
catalogues in an 80/20 mix of urban & rural areas. It's cost me petrol,
oil, tyres, filters and (frequent) headlight globes, plus a new chain and
brakeshoes at 20ish and a full brake rebuild 2 weeks ago. It currently
needs a new chain 'cos one of the rollers collapsed! Basically it's been
    pretty bombproof.

With yours, if it's in neutral can you still push it or is it locked up?
Or it *can* be moved around:
    Will it start? If so:
Can you select 1st gear? (centrestand, wheel off the ground)
If so, does it crunch going into gear?
OR once you give it enough throttle to start the back wheel turning?

If you do buy another one, make sure it's at least a 98. Rear hub is
bigger & the weight limit is higher, but you still can't get oversize rear
brake shoes for the bloody things!

FWIW, 3K is enough to have bought you a good recent ex Oz Post bike with a
warranty! If you're round Sydney, try the contact info on

    postiebikesrus.com.au

I *haven't* used them, but going on a friend's extensive experiences with
them, they should give you a straight answer to "what's stuffed &
    'owmuchizzit?"
    Cheers

I think PullVIGOUROUS is severely having a lend of you Hippo.
He'd never buy a Honda and NO-ONE would ever spend $3000 fixing a Postie.

Ta to both. 'Matt' was who response was aimed at.
Paul could just put Lancer badges on one and all the probs would disappear
    :)

  11. Postie bikes with 20k kms on them regularly go for $600-$700 around here at
auction. I've never seen them go for more. If he spent $3k he could of bought
    5 of them at auction.

have it shipped if you want. They are all sold with Rego.
