I thought it would be a nice day for some fettling on the black 400/4
so I stripped off the stainless steel abortion of a headlamp bracket
to fit the used brackets that I had so carefully cleaned and painted.
Instead of a load of wires and connectors inside the headlamp I find
2 strips of plastic screw connectors hidden behind. This is not
    looking good but carry on.......
The threaded portion of the top bracket that holds the clocks turns
out to be too short to get the nuts on, looks like the guy who
stripped it off of its original bike sheared them off.

OK, off to the parts diagram at cmsnl, Part number is 37211-377-000
    which is unobtainium. ARSE.

The little bracket that holds the 3 way brake joint is also missing,
back to cmsnl, part number 53208-369-000, also unobtainium. At least
I can get away with a bit of metal with 2 holes drilled for this one.

    Today is not my day.

  3. I have both these parts, and they're yours for free.

All packed up and going off in the post today.

Any more bits will be charged for!

Many thanks again, the reflectors cost me about the same as David Silver
sells them for, without having to wait for the next stock to arrive.
Being daft, of course, I was too busy bidding on the reflectors and missed
the chainguard which also went for a sensible price.

This afternoon is camchain tensioning time, if I manage to get it quiet
with a good poke I can then check the timing and fettle the carbs which
should even up the tickover and stop the clutchbasket clattering.

I can't see reflectors on DS's site. Normally, a pair of used genuine
ones goes for £25-30. There are plenty of pattern ones about, but very
few genuine OE Stanley ones. It's the same with indicator and tail
light lenses now. He doesn't list genuine components for either any
more. I sold a good OE (in other words, bearing the Stanley name) lens
    for a tenner this weekend.

Chainguard - yes, that went for a bit less than I'd expected. The
toolkit, OTOH, made more than I'd dared dream.

There ain't nothing on this planet that will stop a 400F clutch basket
    chattering.

They are there, but not listed under the CB400F.
This seems to be a common problem especially for parts that were used
on several bikes. FWIW the reflectors are also a Kawasaki part.
Goto cmsnl, look up part number, search DS by partnumber - voila.
Indeed, a bit of chatter is fine, but if the tickover is uneven it makes
all sorts of clattering as bits in the clutch and gearbox try to keep up.

So far I have poked the camchain, a lot quieter but still audible, good
enough but it should probably be replaced eventually.
The ignition timing was bloody miles out, I find that it is impossible
to get it on the marks unless you get the points gap down to 12 thou.
Both bikes the same so the Haynes BOL spec of 12-16 is probably wrong.

Tickover is still uneven so the carbs are next.
